Katniss isn't terrible in Catching fire, for the time being, but that's exactly what I was thinking. Mockingjay ruined quite a few characters.
Also, Awsome Possum. That guy who said Busby...I can see where he tried to go; Busby was laughably bad in his first installment, and may his soul be blessed in the 3D version. But this Possum is just another clone of Sonic without any of the cool; just some fuzzy, weak one-liners and very Sonic-esque gameplay. The death was admittedly somewhat intriguing, but having a character good only when he turns into a tombstone (what) just shows that you suck as a character.

Shinji is a pretty damn good one for this. he's 'good' in the sense that he inspires some kind of emotion. thing is it's the emotion of yelling at him to stop being so damn terrible.

For me the worst protagonist of all time is the guy from that anime Qwaser. (For anime fans, it's the one where a guy sucks on boobs for his powers, and it's mostly played completely seriously.)
He is a runt who acts all arrogant and mean to the chicks and makes fun of them, and in this crazy world they put up with him. The epitome of lameness.
I agree on the lameness of Shinji, but he's not nearly as mindblowingly lame as this guy.

Well...I hated her on the first couple of reads, and then something clicked in my perspective where I "got" her character, and now think she's actually pretty fantastic.
I mean, it's a good question why anyone would make a submissive martyr blood-doll who regularly gets mind controlled as a main character, but it's not like she's poorly executed within the scope of that role. Hell, a lot of the humor tends to revolve around and be directed at her, too, so it's not like the other characters in the book take her seriously or respect her.
No, I still think the real problematic character in Twilight is Edward. What the hell is his motivation? Ok, so he falls madly in love or something...but why? How does this happen? It's not like any of the other Vampires are doing something so stupid.

There are people who LITERALLY believe Katniss is a bad character?
I mean, she's dumb as hell sometimes, but she's not AWFUL (hell, she's not even the worst MAIN character. Lookin' at you, Gale and Prim). And Mockingjay was nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.

I mean if you don't like the genre at least there's shows where the main dude is boring and devoid of personality or emotion, but Tomoya's a really likeable guy.
Odd choice there Cokes, it can be compelling watching and being in the shoes of a flawed, corrupt person. He's a very well done protagonist, even if you don't dig it would be hard to make a case for anywhere near the worst of all time.

You understand by worst we probably don't mean "most evil" or "least heroic" or something, we mean worst as in the worst for the story, the most poorly done, etc?
If you say an exceptional protagonist is the worst, well, that's just being odd for the sake of it.

Bella Swan and Other M Samus are definitely the best answers ITT. And of course, there's also Zohan, from You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Man, that movie was such a train-wreck.

Yeah, he's terrible, but it's entertaining to watch how terrible he is! I enjoyed watching Mike Dawson, which is a lot more than I can say about some protagonists.
