both my parents did not support my decision to play high school football back in the early 00s. Because of the health issues. And this is at the high school level. After I finally got to start a few games my senior year, some of the hits made you feel like ****. And i must say again, this was at the high school level.

The game has evolved so much in the past 25 or so years due to things like the science of working out. Players in the earlier eras had huge health effects, and in the present we have linebackers who can generate hundreds or even thousands of pounds of force to make a tackle. Ya medicine is better, but not good enough.

I really can see the game going extinct if these mental issues that concussions can cause become very prominent.

RIP Seau. I feel really bad for him and his family right now.

people said the same thing about boxing and horse racing back when they (and baseball) were the big three sports. Hell baseball is pretty much becoming 3rd to the NBA now too.

I understand the NFL today is bigger than those sports when they were big (early 1900s), but the bigger they are...., etc.

And all three are still around; not "extinct".

Football is never, ever dying out. Become less popular? Sure, eventually. But it won't be because of concussions.

Also, RIP. This is really a tragedy.

however those sports' decline was because of popularity decline to the general public

Football's death would be because its becoming increasingly dangerous for a players health.

Actually, football nowadays is a lot safer than it used to be (Still not good for your health or anything, of course). So saying it's becoming "increasingly dangerous" is a big misnomer.

If you really think football will ever die over players health, you're really overestimating how many people care that football players go through this kind of thing.

Actually, it is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Ray Lewis generates about 1000 pounds of force when sacking a QB. Guys like Jack Lambert and Jack Tatum (most feared hitters of the era) were wimps compared to today's LBs and Safeties. Due to the science of working out.

The game is faster than ever. Sure padding might be getting better, but the speed of the game is increasing faster than the technology of the speed of the prevention methods.

F = m*a. The average weight of a player is increasing, and the speed of the game is increasing.

While this is true, I wasn't just talking about the padding. There is MUCH more regulation as to how a player can go after another these days; helmet-to-helmet hits, horse collar tackles, chop blocks, facemasks, late QB hits...all of these are things you could do in the game back in the day that you can't do now without getting penalized. As well, at least in recent years, concussions are being viewed as far more serious than they were, and as such players aren't coming back onto the field one week (or the same day!) after getting one like they used to.

I suppose it probably evens out in the end, but I still dispute the phrase that it's becoming increasingly dangerous.

i agree that concussions are being viewed more, thus causing people to think that its happening more. But some other things.

All of those things are very serious, some of the most serious injuries in football. And it does appear that the number of these infractions are declining a bit. But when I played high school ball, i remember my coach reading an article to us saying how the average NFL OL, RB, DL, TE, and LB takes the equivalent of about 5 car crashes a game. I really wish I still had that source.

The amount of increased penalties does not "even out in the end" of seeing guys like haloti ngata maul a QB/RB causing his head to bounce off the ground on a perfectly legal play.
