I turned in my letter of resignation on Friday because I had no interest in coming back to teach the same thing I taught this year (chemistry).

But it turns out that there's a new position open: Forensic science/soccer coach.

Now, I know I'm certified to teach forensic science since I have a Science Composite certification but I want to know is how hard it will be to teach since I don't know much about it.

Obviously, I would prepare over the summer and I can learn as I go but since I'll have the added workload of coaching, I don't want to bury myself with work.

Now, it is urgent because I JUST turned in my letter of resignation and I know my department head will take me back but the principal seemed quite annoyed that I was quitting so the sooner I act, the better chance I have.

So, I'd like to know anything you guys know about it (what type of work did you do, was it mostly labs, is it hard, etc).

As always, real and joke answers are appreciated.

tl;dr version WHAT IS A HIGH SCHOOL FORENSIC SCIENCE CLASS LIKE?

Well, I am incredibly excited about it.

I was all stressing out about whether or not to come back and teach chemistry because I hated it this year but I didn't even know about this position.

I was so against going back that I turned in my letter of resignation with NO OTHER PROSPECTS.

Now that I know about this position, I am pumped to go in tomorrow and talk to them about this.

Unless you need like field experience or something. I need to know noooooow.

Me either.

At least not a school teacher.

I taught martial arts for a long time and tennis for a short bit before teaching high school.

Oh, lol.

GOD YES, of course I'll do that.

I do that already as a chemistry teacher!

I just can't, in good conscience, take the job if I don't think I'd be good at teaching it.

I did that an hour or so ago and have been reading about it since!

I mean I know what forensic science is but since it's not a core subject, I would likely be responsible for most of the curriculum so I just wanted to get a feel beyond what I've read.

I'm pretty much going to, just wanted to get as good of an idea before I go in tomorrow as I can because there is no way I am backing out if they say yes.

I don't want to screw them over.

Anri have you not seen any comedy movie about people who aren't strictly qualified somehow becoming amazing teachers?

Basically this:

1. Know the subject (you are working on it)
2. Learn to sound confident that you actually know the subject (work on this!!!)
3. Be likable so the kids don't hate you and have lots of notes so the book worms will be too busy taking notes to ask you questions you may not know.
4. Google.

Nope, this is an elective and it can be so much more interesting to the kids (and me, which helps them too).

And it is for juniors/seniors instead of sophomores.

And there is no state test for this so most of the bulls*** that pissed me off is gone.

AND I will only have 5 classes instead of 7 since 2 periods will be soccer.

It's too good to be true and I hate myself for not knowing about it before I turned in my letter.

Yeah, I am really gonna lay it on thick just how excited I would be to teach this subject.

And honestly it's true.

The one problem is that I am not a fan of the head coach (I'd be the assistant) and I think he might not like me. So he could hurt my chances but I doubt it.

This is the most important factor to determine whether you'll enjoy it. Freshmen/Sophomores SUCK. Juniors and Seniors are much better. Somewhere between Sophomore and Junior year kids tend to suddenly grow up and make a leap in maturity. All of my teachers as a Junior and Senior said they much prefer the upper classes to the lower ones.

Not sure what my plan will be if they don't hire me for this job.

My other options are:

Teach chemistry again (I know this job is still mine if I want it, she literally told me I could still change my mind).

Teach biology but UGH freshmen and I like biology LESS than chemistry.

Try to get a job at a different school. Not sure if this will be easy or hard...

Yeah, I do know that much is true but I have the best, most versatile certification (I can teach biology, chemistry, physics, aquatic science, forensic science and others) and I'm a second year teacher so they'd have to pay me the least.

So out of all teachers, I'd at least have the best chance.

Also, I know that a school much closer to where I live has three science positions open (just applied online).

All are connected to coaching.

One is assistant softball/volleyball.
One is assistant girl's basketball.
One is assistant boy's soccer.

I'd take any of those over my current job but I'd need to know soon if I could get any of those jobs.

Can you teach math too? (Just curious)
But yeah looks like teaching an elective or physics would be a better option than chem since you'd probably get older students and/or students that are actually choosing to take the class rather than being forced to take it. I imagine you could learn the material for basically any class you could be teaching at a normal high school over the summer.

I am going to take the math composite test later this year or early next year.

If I pass that, I would basically be as desirable to employers as possible since I am also willing to coach almost any sport.

Took a Forensic Science class last semester. It was a lot of genetics, basic biology, crime scene investigation procedures and analysis, some history of the field including what laws were important. And since it was an Anthropology class we also had a portion of the class dedicated to forensic anthropology which involved learning about the skeleton and how it's used in relation to forensic science including age estimates and sexing. Basically, it was a sick ass class even if I had trouble staying awake most of the time.

How "hands-on" was it?

Did the teacher just like mostly lecture about these things?

Did they often show videos?

Did you guys get to do a lot of experiments or did you just learn about what experiments there are?

Sadly, it was all lecture based. Except for the forensic anthro section, during that we got to handle a number of bones and such. Though since it was pretty much an overview class, we only got one class with the bones. I'd imagine you'd be able to make it a lot more hands on quite easily though. Especially the genetics and biology stuff. And creating your own crime scenes and having the students go through the procedures in some way might be cool.

Videos were shown, yeah. I remember we watched a scene or two from Dexter when we went over blood splatter analysis (which was a really cool section). We also watched a video of how DNA analysis has cleared a lot of falsely accused people though I can't remember the name of it right now.

Like I said, it was all lecture based, two days a week. But in a high school setting I'm sure there would be a lot of time to actually do experiments and stuff, especially if they're planning on it being a year long course.

assuming this is for college, forensic science, as a course, happens AFTER you take biology, chemistry (those two are first year), physics, and organic chem (your second). it's pretty heavy on the sciences since ultimately you're mostly gonna be doing lab work. gotta know calculus by the time you reach it too, but considering chemistry + physics this is unsurprising. it's a pain in the ass that very few students ever reach at the college level. however, if this is more high school then really focus more on having them get the core sciences and math down because THAT is gonna matter much more to them if they ever want to pursue this.

Oftentimes, a teaching position is linked to a coaching position simply because they need one science teacher and they need one coach.

It can also be because a coach has a specific schedule and a specific set of class periods for the subject he/she teaches is built around it.

And they can't risk filling one (or more) teaching positions without getting a coach too because they have to be a teacher as well.

Or vice versa.
