Definitely the best book so far, might start Feast tonight.

But damn, they killed everyone: Robb, Cat, Ygritte, Joffrey, Tywin and Lysa. And maybe Shae, did Tyrion tighten that chain around her neck so she couldn't breathe? It was just a sentence. And then the Hound might also be dead, probably. Anyone I missed?

I'm not sure how I feel about Joffrey's death, I was hoping Arya would do it or it would be in some battle, did the boy ever leave the castle? The Wall stuff was great, can't believe Stannis came up and there was FINALLY some meetings between characters. Just hearing Melisandre say Jon Snow brought a smile to my face. I was hoping Arya and the Hound would make it to the Eyrie. But it looks like she might be able to meet up with Daenarys. Definitely a lot of promise with her story and this secret society that knows that phrase. Also a little disappointed Tywin went out like that, was hoping he'd go down bigger. Lysa probably had the greatest death in the series. I was freaking out thinking Sansa might be next but Littlefinger saying he only loved Cat, the push and then telling Sansa to let the guards in and tell them that the singer did the deed. Brilliant.

Really interested to see more of the Others vs Melisandre and the Maestor telling Sam that the sword might be a fake because it wasn't burning the sheath. And Jon the new Lord Commander, Stannis won't like that!

I was disappointed Theon's chapters stopped so early, I really want to know what happened with him, how his dad died and what Asha is doing. Also I hope Osha and Rickon get some story as well.

I've been waiting so long for Barriston to make his appearance again, that was great too. It looks like Dany might be settling down or at least until the Dragons grow. Also, is there a complete map of the world? I can't seem to figure out where she is in relation to everything else.

OH and WTF at ZOMBIE CATELYN? Did they bring her back like that lightning lord(?) the Hound killed?

Lastly, **** the Freys. Can't believe they got Grey Wind as well.

Yeah, Stannis's "Lightbringer" is obviously fake - it was cool how easily Maester Aemon saw through it. But as the readers we already know who Azor Ahai reborn (probably) is - we saw the replay of his story happen to one of the characters in book 1.

Azor Ahai, dude who tried three times to forge a magic sword, the first two times it broke, finally he quenched the sword by stabbing his wife with it and killing her.

"It is written in prophecy as well. When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone."

Seems pretty obvious it's supposed to Daenerys, although Martin could be tricking us of course. She was born on Dragonstone, she hatched dragons out of stone, trying three times and sacrificing her husband on the final try to do it.

Actually, I thought Tywin death was the best one. And don't forget about Oberyn! I have a feeling everyone will like him in the TV show.

However, I'm sorry to say this, but prepare to be disappointed. Feast and Dance just can't compare with SoS. Yes, probably because of the expectations Storm raises, but...

IIRC, 75% or so of chapters in Feast were either of Jaime, Brienne or Cersei (definitely the best ones).

one thing you may want to try doing is reading Feast and Dance at the same time. there's a chapter guide out there that tells you which order all of the stuff happens in chronologically.

there's nothing wrong with reading Feast and then Dance, but just know that the events of the books happen out of order and overlap to a pretty large extent (especially through the first half of Dance). I didn't get the chance to do this myself since I got into the series long ago and have been reading them as they came out, but it might be an interesting experience to try and read them in chronological order.

As to the chronological reading, they do have a chronological chapter guide mostly worked out, but I wouldn't suggest doing that the first time, as it apparently does not read as well. It takes away what suspense there is, it makes for an uneven distribution of chapters... it's a fun way to get more out of it as a veteran, but as a rookie it's a bit much.

And as much as I wanted to see certain people kill Joffrey, ultimately his death was very satisfying and fitting: helpless and terrified, never looking more like the child he is, dying in his family's moment of triumph.

Tywin's is likewise suitable.

I have a lot more stuff that I'd go into, but I don't want to be tempted to be drawn into spoilers, so I won't talk at all about overall themes, I'll just comment on stuff that you read.

Same with Dance.

I'm a bit confused as to why there are so many one-shot PoV characters. Doesn't really seem necessary to spend all that time introducing them if you never really use them. Apparently there are condensed versions of Feast and Dance that make the pace of the books more tolerable.

And I never read the short stories... didn't realize they were at all relevant.

Unclear. At the end of Feast he had a note saying "Check bookstores next fall!" and then it took 5 years.

Basically, he was originally going to do a time skip after Storm, with some flashbacks or something. Then he realized he couldn't get it to work. Then the book got too huge so he split it based on characters. He originally thought he'd be able to get Dance out quick, but he ended up trashing everything and rewriting it. He was having a lot of trouble with a certain part, he'd kinda written himself into a corner, and that slowed him down a lot.

So... on the bright side, he has gotten through the "middle books" and he is now getting down to the stuff he's wanted to do and which he has had figured out from the beginning. Feast/Dance were books he never meant to write. "Winds of Winter" and "Dream of Spring" are what he started the entire series to get to and which he has been building towards all along. So... he should be more motivated and have this planned out better.

On the not-so-bright side, he thought he was in good shape when Feast got published and we saw how that turned out.

Also, some people think HBO might be on his ass to finish, but I doubt HBO execs expect this show goes 7-8 seasons. I dunno how long it'll go after season 4 (second half of Storm).

No chapter at the end of the hardcovers. There might be one at the end of the paperback when it comes out. I think he's read some samples at appearances he's had. But basically, no one knows how long it'll take, including GRRM. The guy takes on way too many non-soiaf projects and he's slow in general, so I assume it'll be another 5 years if we get it at all.

I mean, it's mostly just drawing stuff from what he's said over the last 5 years. How he had it all figured out for a 3 book series or whatever and it grew in the telling, his using-then-abandoning of the timejump, all of his trouble with needing to get people where they needed to be... almost all the reasons he gave for why Dance was taking so long should NOT apply to Winds.

But I don't trust him at this point, and I'm expecting 5 years and/or his death.

Well there's stuff foreshadowed in book 1 that's not realised yet, and multiple plotlines started in book 1 that are nowhere near concluded yet, so you've got to kind of assume he has a plan for the last couple of books.

I'm going in with mindless "Winds will be out Summer 2013" optimism. I'm sure I'll regret that in said Summer, but still!

They could lose half of their viewers and still be their most successful show right now, I'm pretty sure. It's hard to find a collection of HBO show ratings all in one place, but Veep's series premiere was only 1.4 million, for comparison.

From a brief glimpse through the Feast, it looks like there's no Tyrion chapters. I'd imagine once they got here during the season they will definitely start moving things around.

One of the last seasons of True Blood had Bill still staring despite the book it's adapted from has him playing no role at all in.
