I thought Homeland was going to be the best new show not named Game of Thrones but Girls is looking to snatch it very quickly.
Shows, Songs, Movies, Media in general are always trying to capture a generation and market it to its inhabitants and yet, in one of life's great coincidences, one that isn't trying to sell you anything at all just so happens to capture everything in one go.
Girls feels like that show. It's smart, edgy, funny, sophisticated, clever, and most importantly it's HONEST. It's writer/director/star Lena Dunham never shies away from the truth, nor does she pat herself on the pack for exposing it. She's overweight and unlike most "bigger" actresses she doesn't hide beneath all black clothing, on the contrary, she is naked quite often.
I don't wanna ramble and rant but you should watch it. It's on right before Game of Thrones and you probably have 30 minutes to kill anyways.

It does not capture this generation. It captures a specific demographic of post-grad students who live in a big city in their 20's. I do not believe that most people would find these characters all too relatable. In a few scenes, yeah, but overall, after those 2 episodes, definitely not. The show has wit, but it gets campy at times. The characters are too flat right now. They all worry incessantly. They all come across as entitled. I don't find them charming. Even the better ones. The male characters are even worse.
I'm not a big fan of TV drama's overall because I tend to view them too critically, but this show is just another one of the lot to me. It doesn't present anything new, and is rather predictable. Maybe if I lived in a big city I'd be able to relate better, but, well, I don't.
Re-watched it... as a comedy show, it has some moments. It's like Hanna is going to be paired off for a few amusing/absurd conversations with someone else, those will be amusing, but the rest of the show is p. bad.

What else is this generation other than post grad 20 something's raised on the Internet with all the information in the world but no clue as to how to use it.
The guys in the show are one dimensional but in the best way possible: they are cardboard cutouts used to express the women's personalities but also to set the stage for honest reflection. This will not be the first show/movie where a woman falls out of love with a man because he stopped acting like one( see: blue valentine). Nor will it be the first movie where a woman falls for a D Bag who ignores her and makes fun of her. But it is the first one where it is women admitting it at point blank range, whose sole purpose is to rub it right in your face sans pretense or facade. The show never makes it seem like these women are bad or immoral for their sex lives.
Refreshing. That would be the word to describe it. HBO is killing it with female characters lately.

It's so easy to sum up a generation in a single sweeping generalization.
The male characters are not used in the "best way possible." They're identical to most side characters of any other drama. If anything, what you described them as is EXACTLY what I'd expect from a ho-hum show. It's really easy to be honest in writing a script. It's also really easy to be campy and conventional.
And to the lack of immorality being presented with their sex lives - so what? Is that how other drama's would present these kinds of sex lives? Why does that hold any credence to what is of value?
