PS3 HD Collection versions, if you care. I only recently played them because I didn't care or something when I was 9 years old (for 2 SoL) I guess.
The more complex and larger map design of MGS3 doesn't fit a stealth game well, nor do the extra limitations of footstep noises or needing to hide with camouflage. TS and MGS2 are much faster and easier to manipulate than MGS3.
MGS2 also has the best atmosphere/story/whatever and the simpler industrial graphics have aged far better than MGS3's. It also has the best bosses, easily so in terms of gameplay.

It's always interesting to me how diverse MGS opinions are. There's never any real consensus on which one is the best because there's so many different criteria you can judge by.
IMO MGS3 the best and MGS4 is the worst, and 1 and 2 could go either way.

Favoring MGS2 is fine, but I don't know how anyone can actually think the boss fights are the best. The RAYs fight is really good, but that's about it. The rest aren't all that great.
MGS3 has some of the best boss fights ever. And I actually enjoy all of the battles.
The only thing 2 is bad (and by bad i mean bad for the series, all 4 of the mgs games are top 50 or so games ever) in is boss fights. The harrier was decent, the rays fight was good. The rest? Meh. Maybe fatman was decent i suppose. 4 only had 1 bad boss fight (raging raven) and 1 average fight (crying wolf). The rest were all very well designed imo.
But the main reason why I put 1 and 2 ahead of 3 and 4 is the theme/moral. The nature vs nurture debate in mgs1 was very original for a storyline in gaming back then, and mgs2's moral of how much do our "memes" define us was great too. I really feel if you can put aside some of the over the top stuff at the end, MGS2's theme is a huge conversation starter.
Oh, and MGS2's tanker portion is the best 2ish hours of the whole series. So theres that too.

Raging Raven and Crying Wolf were fun. Screaming Mantis is a bad boss fight. Vamp is pretty bad too. Otherwise the rest of the battles were great. But MGS3 has no bad boss fights.

It's true, pretty much ranking things is what we talk about the most. Everybody digs different stuff, at the end of the day it's like comparing what kind of porn gets you off.

Yeah, the Vamp fight in MGS2 is definitely my favorite boss in the series so far. He's pretty damn cool, it takes place in a cool area, and most importantly it's really f***ing fun to play. The Ray Army and Fatman are both awesome in theme and gameplay, too. Solidus fight is a great way to end the game and is good gameplay wise because it gives you a boss fight to use the sword in. Olga is just kind of "eh" but it's so early in the game so whatever.
There's definitely fewer boss fights in MGS2 than the other two games but they're definitely higher quality overall.

I love MGS3's bosses. I'm stereotypical like that. I really don't like MGS2's as much but they're good. MGS1's are pretty much in the same camp. MGS4's range from some of the best to some of the worst -- truly a token of MGS4 on the whole. Peace Walker's don't really do it for me but I admire the challenge.
let's actually list the boss fights for the first three games and see how they stack up! (i haven't played 4)
MGS1 Revolver Ocelot - frustratingly meh running around in circles M1 - just ok Gray Fox - first boss fight that felt epic and the increasing difficulty was good Psycho Mantis - great atmosphere fighting him for the first time but loses its appeal after that one time Sniper Wolf 1 - same as above Hind D - first time we see Snake actually stacked against really s**** odds and the challenge is fun especially when Liquid goes apes*** in the latter stage of the fight Sniper Wolf 2 - better than the first but the limited options... limit the fun to be had Vulcan Raven - good one that keeps you on your toes and the many ways presented to you make this one really fun Metal Gear REX - epic, emotional, and certainly challenging so this one's alsoa goodie Liquid Snake - melee combat on top of REX was a fun little thing but the car chase at the end can be frustrating
MGS2 Olga - solid pistol shootout with a couple of fun tricks you can use to your advantage and enough variety in Olga's pattern Fatman - ridiculous setup but surprisingly fun with a great twist in the end Harrier - same as the Hind D but even more of a challenge (f*** this fight in extreme, though) Vamp - ok with enough thrills to keep your adrenaline pumping Metal Gear RAYs - good stuff on normal, the most emotionally draining fight on extreme (which is also a good thing!) Solidus Snake - i don't know why this doesn't get brought up as a positive in comments about MGS2's boss fights because this one's got the excitement, the epic quality, the accelerating pace, and the challenge that make for a good boss fight!
MGS3 Revolver Ocelot - best first boss fight The Pain - ridiculously stupid yet also boring The Fear - thankfully this one's better mainly because of the added variety to the ways you can beat him The End - best The Fury - hilariously fun and exhilirating fight Col. Volgin - like the Fear fight, the number of silly little ways to beat him elevates tjhis into a good one Shagohod - my least favorite of the robot fights but it certainly isn't bad The Boss - second best to the End in terms of pure gameplay (but it sure is satisfying countering her CQC attacks) but certainly has the best atmosphere and the best end hands down
so yeah MGS3 still wins out with five good-amazing boss fights

I haven't played any of the games on Extreme (played them all on Hard, MGS2 with game over if discovered on because that's less frustrating) and I doubt I will for quite a while. I don't really want to replay these games just for the gameplay/stuff I can collect right now and I'm not sure if I ever will. I'd play 4 and Peacewalker PS3 HD before doing that, too.

MGS2 Euro Extreme is fairly well-regarded as the hardest game in the franchise if done in such a fashion. Which is pretty impressive to me because, RAYs notwithstanding, I tend to think of it as the easiest of the bunch on lower settings.
Big Boss > all. Therefore MGS3 has the best characters. It also has the Boss and the Sorrow. And Little Baby Ocelot (I <3 Josh Keaton). Volgin is pretty badass too. EVA ain't bad. And THE END. Best boss fight ever.
I should also mention that I love Raiden and I love MGS2. But aasdifugha Rose is so terrible and Cambell isn't that great either. Vamp is kinda cool in 2 but he's terrible in 4. Fortune is stupid. Fatman is the worst aside from Rose. Solidus is cool at least. Him, Raiden, Snake, and Otacon are really all that MGS2 has.
See, the problem isn't necessarily that you like bad characters or dislike good characters. It's when you go to one extreme with the character when you should be going to the other. I don't even want to think about who you're ranking below Fortune if you think she's a top 5 character.

Well, I started it a long time ago. Got up to... I forget exactly, it was soon after you see Liquid Ocelot for the first time.
Then I got distracted from it. Then I told myself I wanted to replay 1-3 because I was forgetting a lot of ****. And I'm in the start of MGS3 now!
Also 1 vs 3 characters is close. All of the MGS3 bosses (no, not those Bosses) are pretty dumb as far as characters, except Volgin and Sorrow who are alright. The Bosses are great obv as are Eva & Ocelot and your support crew is pretty good. 1 like everyone is good, as are the bosses, except the 2nd half story of Meryl. And in 2, everyone (new characters) is "okay" except Rose who just brings it down so damn much.
