That is definitely one of the greatest ending themes out there. I may prefer the sequels very slightly, but their ending themes don't compare. (Although they are good.)

I read a pretty kickass interview with one of the writers... I wanna say Patrick Weekes? Anyway, he summed up his thoughts on what the lyrics to ME1's ending meant to him, while encouraging everyone to keep an open mind and come to their own conclusions. But anyway, for him it wasn't just a romantic love thing, but also a story of Saren's last little bit of 'turianity' hoping for Shepard to kill him.

Pretty crazy interpretation but it's always stuck with me.

I interpreted it as a tribute to Shep's team and how even someone like Shep needed help to accomplish what she did. That's probably the most common interpretation, but tying it to Saren is awesome.

Yeah, true that.

Saren really was pretty ace. He's not the only cool antagonist in the series but he might be my favorite. It's close between him and The Illusive Man for sure. I realize TIM's got more love overall but I've always found Saren's (sadly, few) scenes all top-notch.

Please, mang! I've been all about that Saren for years!

B8 in general, however, has generally scoffed at many things ME1. But you, our resident Lover of First Games, have held the line and I appreciate your support for one Arterius' reign.

Saren wasn't a bad villain, but he's just not around enough for me to really get into him.

For me, even with a lot of the ending ME3 stuff, I love the Illusive Man as both an ally and an enemy.

I'm OK with the Reapers as a 'force of nature' in ME3, really, and I rather like The Illusive Man (but he's grey for most of the series). But you're right, it did.

That one conversation with Sovereign on Virmire is seriously a top ten moment for me series-wise. But I do like to remind people who hate Harbinger to an unhealthy extent that Sovereign was probably even worse about it during ME1's endgame, to be fair, yeah.

This, this, this so much. I have said it before as well. They never should have been given an origin and that's one of the many things I hate about the star child.

Sovereign was so badass too. His voice sent chills through me. I wish he would have had more dialogue.

I'm pretty comfortable with Starchild's explanation of the Reapers, warped and "Yo dawg'd" as it may be. Say what we will about the rest of Starchild's stuff, but that never really got me at all. (I do respect your stance though and see your point.)

Well fair enough then. But for a series like Mass Effect I don't differentiate much. Hell, if I were doing write-ups I'd throw in Balak and Kenson for cryin' out loud.

Shepard just kind of went all over the place, like a Starfleet captain unbound.

See, I prefer villains that regularly interact with the heroes. It's why I love FFVII so much: because Sephiroth regularly screws with the crew, and you're always feeling the effects of his actions as you move along.

Sovereign was a great moment, but it didn't make him a great character.

I can also respect this! And, well, ultimately I probably veer toward your opinion a tad more, maybe. I love Xenogears for many reasons, one of which you just nailed.

But I like Mass Effect's wanderlust, too.

Yeah, Sovereign was actually threatening. He made everyone feel small, and had indoctrinated a strong person like Saren to do his work. It took almost everything to take him out. They handled him well.

Here's the inherent problem with that: people wanted an origin. People demanded an origin. It's why people who care about the Halo series were pissed when Halo 3 came around and offered no explanation of what the Forerunners are.

But that's kinda the problem: they made Sovereign such a huge threat, that they painted themselves into a corner when it came to Mass Effect 3.

Maybe not demanded, but there's definitely a lot of people who wanted to know what the Reapers were. Because they'd be making the same accusations of bad writing and laziness if they didn't offer any reason for what exactly the Reapers are.

I mean, when you create Robotic Eldritch Abominations, people are going to be curious about what the hell they are.

I can believe people wanted to know about the origins of the Reapers, but it's not always a good idea to answer everything. Leaving them a mystery, with small doses of how they may have originated is better than 'here's what we are and what we do credits.'

From what I can gather, the issue is that people aren't upset that the Reapers are explained, but rather the explanation for the Reapers.

If they were given a different origin, I guess people wouldn't be too upset. Like some ancient civilization billions of years ago decided to become Reapers, and they believe that is the ultimate ascended form so everyone else should be reaped.
