Dude is sick a bastard and does not deserve a topic. I was seriously pissed off when I heard the worst that can happen to him is 21 years in prison. That's less than 4 months per killed person. Dude deserves a life-sentence, nothing less.

What's there to discuss? We all know what the weirdo did, we all know what the weirdo claims his reasons were, and we all hope that the weirdo never sees natural light again.

I suppose a discussion could begin if someone wanted to disagree with any of these points!

Regardless of what you think of him he's a really interesting character and the court proceedings are being followed with a lot of interest.

On his sentence he's quoted today (or maybe yesterday) as saying:

"There are only two just and fair outcomes of this case. One is an acquittal, the other is capital punishment."
“I consider 21 years of prison as a pathetic punishment.”

He won't be released after 21 years. Pretty sure I read somewhere that that could be extended to a life sentence.

I've been following the trial. I'm interested in how he's explaining himself.

Norway is also a far more homogenous country, meaning less conflict. What would be a more interesting statistic is the rates of recidivism.

While I definitely would like to see some statistics about that, I'm sure Norway being a homogenous country is not the only factor.

It plays a role, maybe even a large one, but to completely dismiss their judicial system because of it seems not only harsh, but also not that smart.

Norway has about 12% immigrants.

Belgium (about 23% consisting of immigrants) and the Netherlands (11%) (to cite examples close by home, or that are home for me) are both countries that have similar but less extreme juridical systems than Norway. They both have a significantly lower homicide rate than the US (taking the US as a counter example because that's the most familiar for almost everyone here). Considering the US has a 72% white population, which is only about 5% less than Belgium, it seems highly unlikely to take only that (ethnicity) as a factor.

If you think a bit further and take The Netherlands as the best example (same-ish immigration percentage) it seems likely that Norway's judicial system plays a significant role. Norway has a lower homicide rate than The Netherlands.

You could also take in account the fact that Belgium's homicide rate has been dropping and we've never been strict on our migration policies.

Another example is Germany, a country with MORE police officers per 100k people than the US and the country with the most immigrants in Europe. On the other hand more police officers doesn't necessarily mean that it has a strict judicial system. It doesn't. Murderers usually get free after about 20 years. However, their homicide rate is much lower than the US, again.

All I'm saying is you shouldn't shrug off the laws of a country because they have less ethnic diversity. It plays a role, it is not the only significant factor.

He just wants to get the death penalty so he can go out like a boss. 21 years in prison is arguably a really good punishment since it will really torture him that he isn't important enough to be executed.

Apparently there's sentencing called "storage" more or less... As far as I've understood it, it means that a person is locked up until he's deemed to able to rejoin society... Not technically a life sentence, but it could easily become that... So there's still hope...

He's claimed to have planned attacks using Call of Duty.

Apparently to simulate "police response" and "escape strategy" - neither of which would seem to be things that you can actually do with any Call of Duty game, but this means that games sites across the web are about to have Breivik stories.

So...surprise at the lack of Breivik topics is going to turn into boredom at the flood of Breivik topics everywhere.

Hello gentlemen.

Breivik won't be getting out of jail ever, just so you know. The max sentence is indeed 21 years, but after that he will be subjected to "confinement" on grounds that he'll be a danger to society, and that the society will be a danger to him.

However, jail in Norway is more like staying at a mid-range hotel, complete with internet, TV, games, education, health care, and so on. So Breivik's punishment won't even begin to compare to his crime anyway.

But at least we all get to laugh at him for the following weeks, during the clown circus we call a trial. Not sure if you heard, but he broke down crying once a couple of days ago - when they showed his homemade crappy propaganda movie in court. Apparently the pride was too much for him.

Bastøy Prison (Norwegian: Bastøy landsfengsel) is a minimum-security prison located on Bastøy Island, Norway, about 75 kilometers (46 mi) south of Oslo. The facility is located on a 2.6 square kilometer (1 sq mi) island and hosts 115 inmates. Øyvind Alnæs, governor of the prison, leads a staff of 69 prison employees. Of this staff, only five employees remain on the island overnight.[1] The facility is about a one hour commuting distance from Oslo.[2]

Once a prison colony for young boys, the facility now is trying to become "the first ecological prison in the world."[1] Inmates are housed in wooden cottages and work the prison farm.[3] During their free time, inmates have access to horseback riding, fishing, tennis, and cross-country skiing.[1][4]

The prison colony was featured in the DVD extras for Michael Moore's 2007 documentary Sicko. In 2010, both a documentary about the island by Michel Kapteijns was released[5] and King of Devil's Island a Norwegian film directed by Marius Holst.[6]

Its low security so presumably they have access to nearby facilities if they're accompanied? Would be weird if any of that stuff were on prison grounds.
