Yeah, there is no way to really decide if things are discernible or not. We assume it is, because we get nowhere otherwise.
It's more complicated than this. "Discernable" and "scientifically discernable" are two radically different things. I don't think anyone would deny the usefulness of science, however.
its incredibly easy to understand and i am legitimately concerned that people dont get this
He was just pointing out that science has a lot of practical benefits, like medicine. Was invoking premature birth a bit personal? Maybe. But warranted imo, given the ridiculous **** the other guy was spewing.

Incredible difference being being ignorant and being an a******
there's also a difference between innocuous ignorance and people who glorify ignorance or otherwise go out of their way to be ignorant
I also really can't believe someone like you is honestly so sensitive about something like this
You would make a phenomenal brother.

Not in this instance. The initial post was "School is pointless. I mean, for science we have religion. For English, we speak it. For history, they're dead, get over it. For math, we have calculators. For Spanish, we have Dora."
He is, in essence, saying that thousands, if not millions of people are wasting their lives with pointless crap. I can forgive ignorance, but I think it's pretty inconsiderate to say that people who are following their passion and/or making a living off a subject are doing something "pointless." The atheist bro was pretty much an ass about it, but if he had stopped with the second post, it would have been fine.

I swear to god
look at the context of the post...someone who would say something like "for spanish we have dora" is probably a HS freshman at most. he's not really gonna make any sort of meaningful statements for at least 6 years. he's not being a dick, he's being a stupid kid.
the older brother is the one using the younger one's premature birth as a vehicle for calling him stupid
i really...really hope none of you all have siblings with any sort of serious medical conditions.

So, it's ok to give young people a pass on saying stupid crap? Like I said I don't agree about him being an ass to his brother, but up through the posts about religious scientists he was approaching it fine. I have a sister who is 15 years old (highschool freshmen) and if she said that school was pointless and Spanish could be taught by Dora, I would feel it necessary to correct her. Just because they're not saying anything "useful" for years to come, doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to lay a good foundation for them so that once they do grow up they can be a useful adult.
im just saying its kinda sorta awful to use a cutthroat approach involving a serious medical issue like that TO A F***ING FAMILY MEMBER
if my older brother said something like that to me when i was that young, i would cry my eyes out if i saw my younger brother saying something like that to another sibling, i would slap the hell out of him

I remember the days when you could actually read and understand things. What happened?

Sure, but this has nothing to do with atheism. Replace the jerk brother's belief with being a Christian who values science/education. He could still be an ass and still say hurtful things. You are just using the fact that he's an atheist as a means to condemn him. People of all faiths are capable of dickery.

Was it something an atheist said? (Yes) Is this a topic where we post ridiculous things atheists say? (Yes)

But you obviously have an agenda. If faith, or lack thereof, is relevant, that's one thing (attacking other faiths, etc.) but if, say Snooki turns out to be an Atheist, would you be putting the stupid stuff she said in this topic?

I have a limited amount of posts, I only plan on posting the cream of the crop.

if I said something that ridiculous I think my sister would have been in bounds making a comment like that to me, only thing I can fault the atheist with here is focusing solely on that when the rest of john's whinefest was equally stupid...actually the history comment was probably the worst, that might warrant something much more below the belt than what he responded with
"I am not handsome or sexy. Of course, it's not like I am hopeless." "I believe in love at first sight. You want that connection, and then you want some problems." "I'm a meathead. I can't help it, man. You've got smart people and you've got dumb people."
