From: My Immortal | #103 No, only people who are uncomfortable in their own masculinity will ONLY play as a guy character.
If you like the guy character better, great.
If you say I'm a guy, so how can I play a girl, you are insecure.
This.
Reminds me of a day a few years ago, I was playing Guitar Hero (or maybe rock band? don't remember) with friends and we'd take turns, one of the avatar was a girl and I got to play as her, once my turn was finished I went to pass the controller to another guy and he gave me this disgusted look and said '' I don't want to play as a girl! ''.

This is completely different.
Your avatar in a lengthy RPG is different from something that effects 3 minutes.
There's nothing wrong with playing as an opposite gendered character, but there's no good reason to do so in a Pokemon game.
You like the design better? You mean the squat, non-discernible sprite on the map screen, or the character graphic that appears all of two seconds in battle? I just don't understand people who went, "I didn't like the male character in Diamond and Pearl, so I played as the girl", and acted like it mattered in the slightest.

But again, nothing is affected by it in Pokemon so it just comes down to how the player wants to represent himself or herself in the game world. There isn't anything wrong with that. It's not something like...I dunno, Super Monday Night Combat where some of the classes are female and have different playstyles and people "nuh uh no way I'm playing as those chicks," or Metroid where people refuse to play it because Samus is a girl.
This conversation only started because Ayuyu was acting like literally every person who plays Pokemon plays as the female. That's dumb. This whole debate is dumb.
There are people who like playing characters they think have a good design.
It doesn't change anything in the story sure, but you'll see the character as a sprite and sometimes as a picture, so why not pic the design you like the most?
I just consider it default. I am a guy, so when a character is strictly an avatar, I go with the guy. If there's something different, like in a fighting I'll pick a girl and on my second playthrough of KOTOR, I picked the female since it's different.
I usually pick the male sprite because I see myself as a character in the game. My friend always picks the female because it's what he's going to be staring at throughout the whole game.
It doesn't really have anything to do with insecurity. It's just preference.

Well yeah we get that, the problem is would you feel weird if you had to play as the girl? If yes there's a problem.

I guess it's not so much that it would "feel weird" to play as a girl, it's just that if there's an option that isn't awful, I'm picking a guy when it amounts to nothing more than the sprite. Like if for some reason B/W2 decided that one version was only going to have a playable boy and the other has a playable girl, I doubt that would be what determined which game I got.
