She's cute and nice and we talk sometimes and she's nice to me and everything...but I'm terrified of even asking because, ignoring all the usual fears around such a thing, we work in the same office and if something went wrong that could spell disaster.
What should I do?

If so, approach her and take a really deep obvious whiff of her cubicle, and say "Wow _____, you smell absolutely pleasant. Like a hamburger or a very zesty breakfast burrito."
I have a 100% success rate with this one.

There was a signature here. It's gone now. Your face is bees.
Wait until she comes and asks you out. If she wants to have a relationship with you, she will take the initiative and talk to you. The best thing you can do is just make yourself seem attractive with good clothes and hair and such. Whatever you do, don't make eye contact with her ever, and for god's sake don't talk to her. Avoid being in the same room as her, for that matter.

Note that I've never asked anyone out on a date, or been asked out, before, so...this should be interesting.
Never been on a date? Amazes me there are people out there like this. And it sounds like you a functional job meaning, you're close to the age of 22 or over.
I recently went through this with a coworker of mine. Didn't take long to get into her pants, maybe a month and a half. Screwed a couple of times, then a misunderstanding over a text message caused the fledgling relationship to blow up. Now it's super awkward at work, and I probably wouldn't have done it if I knew it was going to be like this. On the bright side, neither of us can say anything, because that will jeopardize both our jobs.

Lots of males fail to find mates.
the numbers aren't nearly this bad in reality but there is that old saying "10% of the men get 90% of the women", as far as natural selection goes it's mostly men that are being selected(both for breeding and for premature death)
I'm 22 and work as a Developer for a staffing company, but the project I work on is for AT&T. In my defense there were no girls in the computer science program where I went to school.

Don't let them razz on you, man. Lots of guys, myself included, are extremely bashful. The unfortunate part is that you have to initiate. The shy girls can just sit back and wait for a guy to eventually come to them.
