I don't get this whole monster concept. I mean sure, you capture them, beef them up, whatever.
I'm wondering, how far are you supposed to level these monsters? My main characters are level 42 for their main role, 15-20 for the others. What level should my monsters be at? I don't want to risk spending way too much effort on one of these early monsters when I know I'm going to be catching better things, but I know I'm doing something wrong when my monster is absolutely useless in battle unless its a medic.
I'm at the final boss now, and I'm STILL using the tutorial Cait Sith.
But it sure as heck wasn't a smart decision, because it only has like 1000 hp and dies all the time.
I think the trick is to level up one monster, then when you get a better one from the same class, Infuse the old one into the new one to transfer its skills.
But I am not going to get rid of my faithful kitty now after all this time.
Just like I'm not going to ditch my trusty level 60 Chocobo for this Golden Chocobo I found in a treasure box, even if it's superior in every way.
Yeah, I mean I know which monsters to get end-game and max out, I'm just confused as to how much I'm supposed to level these early monsters. Don't want to waste my drops/chips/orbs/whathaveyou.
The level 1 and level 2 monster items are going to be dirt cheap fairly early on, don't worry about wasting those. And stick with the right monster item for your monsters class.
I only use Sazh because it's Sazh though. And I sometimes used various random Ravager monsters, until Noel got useful at that role.
I wish I could find some decent Sentinel monsters, those are rare as hell. Same with healers, which is why I never replaced Cait Sith.
Also, did you keep your monsters level equal to yours throughout the game, or did you tend to limit them?
Since I didn't fight battles I rarely had a lot of monster materials, so limiting their use further was not an option. Most of my monster materials came from treasure chests. That's also why I couldn't afford to raise a big variety of monsters, had to stick with a core party.

Alright. I only have 10 mana droplets, but 67 potent droplets. Is it fine to level say Cait Sith using the potent droplets (increases all), or do I need to specifically use mana droplets?
