If they followed the game's storyline reasonably closely, what are some potentially good ones?

Persona 4 recently wrapped up (minus the true ending) and I thought that was pretty enjoyable on the whole.

For movies, I'd go Metal Gear.

I'm having trouble thinking of any. Most games have pretty poor stories, so adapting them to a format like TV or movie wouldn't work too well.

There are tons of games which potentially be great movies. It's just a matter of if they'd mess up or not. Uncharted is basically Indiana Jones. Metal Gear Solid would be awesome. Deus Ex.

Pretty much this 99% of games have horrible stories and I laugh whenever people say they played a game for the story. This is especially true recently since voice acting dramatically limits the amount of depth a story can have even in big budget games.

What's exactly is a good story? You don't have to have something incredibly deep to have a great story. As long as it flows smoothly, has great character interaction and is entertaining, you have a good story.

and therein lays one of the major problems with games in the story-focused genres

games are never going to flow smoothly because they are always padded
