The simplicity of the button mash system is what I miss most when playing CoM and 358/2. I hate having to build decks/panels. I've heard Birth by Sleep is more similar to KH and KH2 in this regard?

That's what I've heard too but I've never played it. I agree with the dislike of CoM's battle system as well, it's too difficult to handle to be fun.

They called it a deck in CoM but it wasn't really anything like that and you could always reload to restore the deck outside of those removed by sleights. The reason people don't like CoM, in part at least, is that it required pre-meditated math to determine your deck order and some memorization so you could pull your sleights at will.
Or you can make the game really easy by stacking Zeros at the front and making every other card invariably result in the completely broken Sonic Rave!
The BBS battle system is pretty good, but all the surrounding fusion stuff is awfully complicated if I recall. And the Monopoly game and ice cream flavors and auuugh.

Not gonna lie, first time I played through CoM, I just smashed everybody with high-numbered (and a few zeros) keyblade cards with no thought put to sleights.

BBS's is probably the most mashy of all of them outside of the actually difficult fights. <_< They just made it really flashy if you build your deck right.
But BBS's fusion system is pretty much bulls*** if you want any of the actual good passive abilities.
And 358/2 had a battle system almost just like KH1, just with crappier controls. (also panels were awesome)

Birth By Sleep didn't do much for me because the environments are just so flat and sterile. Maybe it's the graphics or the fact it's a portable, but the entire game seemed "off" and was nowhere near as engaging as the PS2 games were.
edit: yeah the fusion system sucks. It makes grinding mats more of a chore than it needs to be.

I think a lot of people did that until they hit Larxene II or Riku IV and gave up.
I think the only problem I had was against... Hook, of all people. Finished with little problem... for Sora. Riku's fight with Ansem was insanely annoying.
Then a few years later I decided to replay, and discovered the power sleights. AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
