Gonna do some different kind of lists for entering into the top 40. Most and Least Surprising finishes, obviously only counting characters who have placed. In reverse order!

Most Surprising:

5) Seifer
I'm surprised, yet I'm not. Heavily nominated and well liked on the board (winning a spot in the NRT as well as placing highly in many contests) Seifer always struggles in this contest for a reason I cannot seem to understand.

4) Sabin
A former runner-up and typical upper midcarder, Sabin will need help to return for Contest XV. Typically one of the most well-rounded VI characters, I was surprised Sabin was unable to garner votes near the end of a round this way.

3) Galuf and Faris
Awarding third place jointly to FFV's best two characters. Not only are the best, but generally they perform the best (outside of Gilgamesh) as well, which is somewhat rare for any game in this contest. However this time, both were managed to be booted while being outlasted by the worst lead pair in FF history.

2) Laguna
Typically VIII's strongest rep, Laguna normally does well on the virtue of being an "Auron type" from his game, popular across most other fanbases and not generally disliked. He typically possesses dedicated voters to keep him alive for a lengthy period of time easily as well, but the fates weren't smiling this time. He'll need help to make next contest, though I'd be very surprised if he failed at doing so.

1) Terra
A no brainer here, one of the mightiest characters takes a very early fall without the former host's backing. This elimination should probably have an asterisk as I feel it is carried over resentment for raytan as well as for User, who admittedly rallied for her just two rounds before her demise.

HMs: Shadow, Fujin

Least Surprising:


5) Gabranth
Though a solid character, he has always lacked the core support group of Dr. Cid (and now Larsa). His performances are typical ho hum and he didn't disappoint here.

4) Lenna
With her alt brigade history, I figured Lenna would be as well. whipper can only get you so far. Bartz is unfortunately mysteriously more popular for reasons I cannot ascertain.

3) Hojo
With an awful initial performance, Hojo returned anyway in XIII and duplicated it. Here he once again fails to do anything; FFVII is simply too massive in scope and he is easily lost in the shuffle. It's doubtful he is even in anyone's top 10.

2) Vincent
Though he is effectively FF7's Auron, Vincent has never been even a fraction of that popular. I normally give him saves despite liking many characters more than him, because I know how badly he tends to fair. I even worry about the chances of him garnering the support to return next time.

1) Marche
I knew coming in that Marche would be weak. No longer amusing to his supporters from last contest, all having moved on to other pastures, Marche as a character became doomed. He effectively returned to the unpopular character with few actual fans that he is, and apparently Jmast will need to work extra hard just to keep him alive. Though he has a win to his credit, it really is not to his credit at all. Unfortunately very few care about Marche himself and he will never be able to overcome the events of XIII.

Marche had a pretty good debut before his booting - 25th or so, I think - and that was fairly legit (amy and the alts didn't care about him at all). But he's always had a target on his back, even moreso this year because of his win. <.<

I think in many respects bland characters tend to do better (or, perhaps, are simply more consistent) in this contest simply because they're inoffensive enough to skirt by from round to round while the lightning rods draw the sniper fire. Terra definitely came in with a target on her back as well (and Vincent too). >.>

Seymour has nice finishes too but I don't kid myself into believing he's very popular. It's more of a credit to your support that he had a legitimate finish that was respectable.

Not really spite, but raytan had a lot to do with her advancing as far as she did every year and User was dragging her along this year. She's just one of those characters that no one really cares to make a priority (except raytan obv). Her entire support structure collapsed. I don't think she's nearly as popular as the stats suggest.

I think you're overestimating his influence. Though it may have played some part in her vast popularity in this contest, she's still quite a popular character and most of the rest of VI's usually strong cast is still around even without the alts.

It's probably an Auron-like thing. A lot of people like Terra, but nobody prioritizes her (any more). If she made it to, say, top 20 she'd probably be a stronger contender than quite a few characters still in this.

For my money, there are remarkably few characters in the franchise which I pretty adamantly dislike and Terra happens to be one of them. There's nothing offensive about her in Balance but her stuff in Ruin is just so augh

Terra lost her biggest supporter. Just because its raytan doesn't suddenly make her illegitimate. What if lefty was gone? Or Inviso? Certainly Cecil and Kuja might not perform as well, but I don't think that means suddenly they aren't very popular and without specific users they wouldn't perform as well anymore.

It's a fluke brought on by wanting to spite someone who isn't here as well as a guy no one liked apparently. I don't really get the whole "punish the person by eliminating their character" philosophy, but obviously tons of people here buy into it or last contest wouldn't have happened.

Oh, I don't kid myself about Marche's popularity (or Terra's for that matter). But I also think that some characters - like Marche and Terra and Vincent - tend to be more volatile in their rankings due to people actively trying to snipe them out at the first opportunity.

And up until now, Terra actually got the reverse benefit every year - remember how often people would throw Terra and/or Celes a vote "for raytan?" This year it was a bit of the opposite, I think. <.<

I haven't seen any concrete proof of that at all. Saying they're from the same IP at the time isn't proof, that's completely consistent with the way it has been since 2007 with them being separate people.

Terra Blandford is totally 'who cares' for me. I wouldn't vote to snipe her out just to spite some previous host I've never interacted with, or to punish User even though he's a douche (he probably doesn't give a s*** anyway tbqh), but all the same I wouldn't think of saving her unless she was in the bottom with characters I actively hate.
