An episode into season 2, actually.

Does this get better? It's okay, but I see people here raving about it being one of the best shows ever made.... and I certainly don't see any signs of that happening here.

Gradually. The generally consensus is season 4>3>2>1 but really the quality is the same throughout. If you don't enjoy the first two episodes of season 2 you might as well stop.

Well, it's not bad necessarily, it's okay and I'll probably finish through.

But as it is this won't even come close to my top 10 shows, let alone #1.

There's no major jump in quality between seasons, if its not grabbing you in early season 2 it probably isn't ever going to.

the first half of season 3 was so slow it caused me to stop watching the show entirely for a few months

but everything before and after is pretty good.

i wouldn't calling BB the best show ever though. not by a long shot.

Honestly I thought the best of Season 3 > Best of Season 4, but Season 4 in general > 3 > 2 > 1

As others have said, show gets progressively better but stays at about the same quality throughout. Out of curiosity, what shows are in your top ten?

It's just like... the characters are all idiots and I can't empathize with them. Sure I guess it's an interesting story but I'm not really invested in much going on. Walt is such an a****** that I really don't care if this all blows up in his face or if he's successful.

The only character I like is Hank, which is surprising because at first he just seemed like a dick. But he's really the best character in the show. He's the only person that's consistently funny, he's the only person that's remotely competent, especially in serious situations, and he's the only character with morals worth a damn. Even if he's rather rough around the edges. I'm just waiting for him to catch Walt because I know he will, but I feel sorry for him because it will tear him up emotionally. That is literally the only thing in this show that has me invested.

For reference, I guess I could list some shows I consider my favourites. They include:

Doctor Who
Stargate SG-1
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
House
Firefly
Person of Interest
Game of Thrones
Arrested Development
How I Met Your Mother
Community

Not in any particular order, but these are shows I find both consistently entertaining and incredibly well made. Some shows are entertaining but are held back because they are just very poorly made (such as the Big Bang Theory). Some shows I can see are technically well made through cinematography, writing, and acting, but..... just aren't engaging. I would say Breaking Bad qualifies for this second category

I am fairly drunk at the moment, but these are my general thoughts.

Well you're just gonna have to disagree with the majority of people watching here, because the characters and how personal and engaging it is is why everyone likes it.

i honestly don't know how you can say all the characters are idiots

morally questionable, sure, but none of them are morons stumbling through the story by sheer dumb luck

well, you could make an exception for Jesse in S1 since he's an uneducated junkie but his character has been logically consistent and has grown a lot since the first season

the only times where the characters aren't competent, and it's probably just Walt and Jesse you're talking about since they're the only characters who do much in S1, are when they're in ridiculously crazy situations they've never been in or when their inherent flaws get in the way such as Walt's pride and Jesse's recklessness

but i was very much intrigued by the pilot and then hooked by the end of S1 that i'm just not sure if you'll end up liking this show at all

if you don't find yourself caring about Walt risking his life and his family by entering the world of illegal drugs and dragging Jesse along his moral descent, then you won't care much for the rest of the show because it's really just more of that but with escalating consequences

Pretty much every interaction Walt has with Jesse is just dumb. Like they get outraged at eachother and say the stupidest **** over NOTHING sometimes. I understand that in some serious situations it makes sense for them to panic and lash out at eachother, like say when they believe Tuco killed Gonzo and is coming after them.

But when Walt just completely loses his **** at Jesse for only making $1300 selling meth on the streets, telling him to grow some balls or whatever?

No, scenes like this completely take me away from the idea that he's capable of the big plans he pulls off like when he blew up Tuco's base or a lot of the science solutions he comes up with to many of their problems. He's an idiot that is poorly written to be a genius when it's convenient and it's really not that good.

It may seem like an odd comparison, but it's like how Naruto is an idiot 99% of the time but there's the odd time he comes up with an amazingly brilliant plan because hes actually a GENIUS or something. You can't write a character to be an idiot most of the time and then have them be suddenly master strategist at the drop of a hat.

I think Jesse is well acted and I definitely like him more than Walt, but.... he's more or less pointless.

i guess you didn't quite understand that Walt actually knows how much money they can make with the exceptionally pure crystal meth they're cooking and that $1300 a week split in half is not only not enough to pay for his treatment from the best medical care in the state for his advanced cancer, it's also not enough for his goal of making sure his pregnant wife, disabled son in high school, and unborn child have enough to live on without financial hardships

surely that's enough for a man who has been emasculated for most of his adult life by his boss in his crappy second job, his wife, his brother-in-law, and his old partners in science to go a bit apes*** when his deadbeat partner does something stupid or fails to see the big picture

he's been a doormat for a long time, an under-appreciated genius, that when he's finally felt some measure of power and control in the thrill of doing crazy illegal s*** where he knows he's good at in a superior role to Jesse, he can let out all his pent-up anger and frustration

it's his ego unbridled that is his flaw, not idiocy

if you still can't swallow that, then there's no more reason for you to continue watching the show because as i've said before, it doesn't stray from that thematic path much and you'll just end up more frustrated

The logic of " we could be making more than this" is not lost on me.

He's still a ****ing idiot. The way he behaves is absolutely ridiculous. He's so childish in so many of his reactions that it's really just not believable that he's survived even this far.

I think that's kinda the point. He's way out of his element.

Walt is a very smart guy, but he's incredibly proud and vain. He thinks he can be a big shot, and his ego blinds him. Add in the immediate need for money due to the cancer, and being thrust so quickly into a new world, and it makes perfect sense to me that he'll have ridiculous reactions and ideas that he tries to rationalize in his messed up way.

And you're acting like being good at chemistry makes him good at dealing drugs. Almost all of his "genius" to this point has had to do with chemistry (going into Tuco's with no real plan but a bag of explosives, making the gas, trying to poison Tuco, etc). Everything else that he's tried to do has been screwed up.

I don't see the inconsistency there.

His childishness HAS had an effect on his life before the show. There is a reason that he went from being such a promising chemist with a great future to teaching high school, and that is part of why he is unhappy.
