the entire plot surrounding itachi was handled terribly. hard to get sad when you're getting smacked in the face by bad writing constantly

Only things from any sort of media that have actually made me close to cry:

Scrubs finale (specifically J.D. watching his future play out). Okay I actually did legit cry.

MGS3 ending, as well as MGS4 ending (mostly just from "this is good, isn't it?")

Aaaaand... I believe that's it.

Aeris was actually pretty sad though.

WAIT! Okami. That ending really got to my emotional side.

And now I'm pretty sure that's it.

Nah, it's just that the reaction is different. When guys see other male figures go through emotional trauma, empathies are triggered and the guy projects himself into the scene. When a girl goes through something traumatic, by contrast, males trigger protective instead of sympathetic instincts. This is why having an antagonist do something cruel to a female lead is an effective way of villainizing that antagonist, even in entertainment directed towards a male audience.
