I've yet to see any criticism from people who have played the game, and it's getting to be crunch time here. I just want to know if there's anything at all I should be wary of here.
I don't think Xenoblade is that special. I don't like MMO-style combat and the cast of characters couldn't be more cardboard. Everything else about the game is pretty good though.
The story and characters are pretty forgettable, and like any RPG the combat can become repetitive, but it's pretty damn good. I don't buy into the "best RPG of the past X years" talk, but I really like the game.

It's a pretty good RPG. I stopped playing it when Skyward Sword came out and I haven't got around to finishing it. I should probably get around to it...
It's absolutely as good as you've heard; the story is far from forgettable IMO, and though the characters aren't the best around, it's a very likable cast. No one is really superfluous or bad.

I get a feeling the non-amazed responses are from people who haven't finished the game yet. It takes a lot of time for the story to really build up steam.
The only flaws the game has are mere nuisances. Personally, I'd say the biggest flaw is the balance issue where if you do a lot of sidequests, you'll end up way overleveled for the main story, so if you want a challenge you have to make sure to only do the missable sidequests, which are marked as such. A difficulty setting would have fixed this completely.
Aside from minor quips like this the game in pretty much perfect though. There aren't many games that fit that description.
It's only like FF12 in the sense that it's a huge world with real-time battles.
Imagine FF12, but without gambits and menus, a much faster battle system where positioning and real-time tactics actually matter, and there are no invisible walls, no waist-high fence will ever prevent you from jumping over it, making the exploration that much more fun.
The scale of the game is pretty spectacular, its well scripted and enjoyable throughout. Its a weird fusion of western and japanese styles that works very well, probably the best rpg in the last 10 years and certainly of the generation.
It's not really like FFXII at all, they have slightly similar battle systems but Xenoblades works a lot better and each character plays uniquely.
The story flows fine and it all feels very satisfying and involving, characters have actual personality and interesting interactions unlike FFXII. Felt a bit like star ocean in the tone of the story, hitting the sweet spot between kooky japanese and soulless western.
You don't really dungeon crawl very much, it all flows nicely and anywhere with a lot of enemies around have plenty of collectibles and optional bosses that break up the monotony.
giving you snippets of story as you dungeon crawl for a long time.
you get your shred of story, then you're off to the next dungeon for little to no reason and your shred of story is just them talking about the next dungeon anyways!
then repeat for several hours until endgame, where it gets decent
Yeah, even if FFXII had the best gameplay ever, there was no way I could play through that extremely dry and uninteresting story with the completely flat and boring characters. Each cutscene was sucking the life out of me as I watched.
