I know absolutely nothing about what I'm getting myself into. I enjoy the Fallout series, but I didn't like Morrowind or Dragon Age. I was told to try this, regardless, and my roommate just bought it. Any suggestions before I dive into this?

Enjoy the ride.

It's a bit different from fallout. In fallout you assign points into the stats when you level up (and you get more points based on your Intelligence)

In Skyrim you get more points into your stats the more you use them.
So instead of devoting points from level up into lockpicking, just pick a crapload of locks.

What this means is that there are a handful of stats that you might ordinarily avoid, but you should do them anyways. Spend some time leveling alchemy rather than just selling all your alchemy ingredients for pennies. Things like that. Because it is by leveling your stats (via using them) that causes you to gain actual character levels.

Map out how you're going to spend your skill points ahead of time. The cap is 70, but you'll be able to do most of the stuff in the game by 50.

Straight damage spell casters (destruction) are fairly weak unless a patch gave them a boost. I like melee/stealth characters since you get to see the cool finishing moves etc.

Unless you really want to, don't spend points on Stamina, even if you're a thief type you don't need it.

If you want to become incredibly powerful, be sure to train blacksmithing and enchanting.

It's on the PS3. I'm not quite sure what race/skills I want to use, yet. I'm looking at trying a thief-type character: sneak around, kill people, all that good stuff. Metal Gear Solid aside, I've never really played this way at all in a game. If you've tried it, what do you think about it. Or, better yet, what have other people done?

PS3 users usually experience some bad framerate issues. To help my game, I turned off all the autosaves except when waiting and just waited whenever I wanted to save. I'd recommend you do the same.

I played a very sneaky character on my first time. I loved it ^_^

Just walk in 'sneak mode' all the time and you'll have full points in sneak in no time =P

But basically whatever you do the most is what you'll be best at. Makes more sense than using melee weapons all day an then putting 13 points into 'ranged weapons' when you level up.

IIRC there is a trait that gives you like 10x damage when you hit with a dagger while undetected. So good! And much earlier in the trait tree there is one that gives you stronger bow crits out of sneak. Definitely your bread and butter trait for sneaking and killing.

Remember to raise points in sneak you have to have someone who can detect you in your vicinity.

I also suggest at least getting the some points for the one handed crit. You'll probably want to switch to a sword (and shield for dragons) since in most fights before you get upper assassin skills you'll only get one backstab an encounter.

I just started playing a while ago, too. I went with a dickhole mage that shoots fireballs and breaks into everyone's houses to steal from them.

I guess melee would do more damage, but if you abuse the fact that fire spells do more damage if the guy is already on fire, you can kill things pretty quickly. The only problem is when you run out of mana during a fight and have abysmally slow regen.

Also what I have noticed is that there's SO MANY QUESTS. Like you really can't just go around collecting quests and doing them as you go, because you acquire them faster than you can finish them. So what I have been doing is just going for the big quest lines and ignoring all the side quests for now. I seriously doubt I will even finish all the main quests before getting bored of the game, though.

Yeah, TES games have an ungodly amount of side-quests.

I've played Morrowind since launch and I still haven't done all of them.
