I've only played for about 4 and a half hours, but this game kicks all kinds of ass. The battle system is off the ****ing wall. My only complaint is that it's almost too deep. Although they limit themselves to giving one tip/hint at the end of each battle to start out, you're killing enemies so fast that it feels like you're just getting bombarded with information and it can be quite hard to process...Maybe it's just because I've never played a game in this series before, but it's a little overwhelming. Still, the battles are incredibly fun, and I just wish that they lasted a bit longer so that I would have more time to experiment and see what works better.
Outside of battle the systems are some of the best I've seen in an RPG. Mixing is just awesome and while the Title system sounds kind of weird when it's explained to you, it's pretty damn cool as well. Gives you a ton of control over how you build your characters while remaining incredibly simple. The game looks ****ing great too.
Story-wise it's actually pretty interesting early on, despite what the reviews said. When I hear people complaining about games starting slow, I expect at least 4-6 hours of crap before it starts getting good (Sup Persona 3?), but I can pinpoint the exact second I started enjoying this game and I'm pretty sure it was under the two hour mark... "Tiger Festival" to be exact. Speaking of that... I actually like the kids in this game too. I generally hate playing as a kid in video games, but Asbel kicks all kinds of ass. He's actually a pretty easy character to like right from the beginning. Can't really comment much on the rest of the cast (although I dig Cheria) but there have been a lot of funny moments... this coming from someone who generally doesn't enjoy Anime type comedy.
So yeah, definitely glad I took you guys' advice. Mass Effect 3 probably won't be touched for weeks.

This is easily the most complex Tales battle system I've seen. It's not just you. 15 hours in and I'm still figuring things out, and I'm a 3D Tales vet.
It took me a long time to get my brain accustomed to the CC/critical system, and I'm only really feeling like I'm playing optimally now that I'm near the end of the game. Got only the final dungeon left.
It's easy enough to figure out the basic gist of it and run with it until you learn how it works through trial and error, though. Just remember: don't guard longer than it takes to get the 3 charges as it starts draining the crit gauge afterwards, when under attack guard then at the last second dash, if the crit gauge is full immediately attack because stuff like getting healed drops it, manually sheathe Asbel's blade from a distance after using B artes because the charging attack sucks, free run with L2 when you need it, when dualizing always shoot for longer words as your quality, prioritize raising minimum CC above everything else, go for titles that unlock A artes over other titles, don't forget to set more B artes to the right analog stick via shortcuts... that's all I can think of right now.

I was considering getting this, but now I don't feel like I'm smart enough. :-\

That's just a list of stuff I learned over 40 hours of playing that I wish I knew at the beginning >_> you can safely ignore most of it if you only play on Easy, Normal, or Moderate, too
