How in God's name did he end up with a 5-seed?

The same way Shepard got a 12 seed and Rayman got an 11 seed: decent competition. Granted, Edgey is FAR more loved on Board 8 than any of these, but maybe it was just the board not initially caring for said character, but changing their minds later. Plus, Red and Akuma are no slouches, though Edgeworth with anything below a 4 seed on Board 8 is screwed the **** up.

On Board 8, Sephiroth, Mega Man, Miles Edgeworth and Auron will annihilate their opponents. Banjo stood a chance, but people vastly preferred Auron.
