Basically, my idea was to have musicians on this board participate in making an album. It won't be cohesive, because I'm sure everyone has different styles they like.
But Vincent, I don't have any musical skill whatsoever, can I still participate? Some skill is preferred, but only creativity is expected. I want to have a good mix of talented musicians and just people dicking around on this. So if you really want to submit that chiptune thingy or beat you made in fruity loops, go ahead.
Who will judge what goes on the album and what not? In an ideal situation every user that's submitted will be on there with at least one of his tracks. If I really feel that this user just submitted for 'lulz' or some other dumb thing though, he or she probably won't be on it.
Can it really be anything I want? Yes. And no. It has to be a completely original track made by you. If it has samples, that's okay. Covers are not allowed, unless I feel you have done something really original with an already existing song. Even then, if it's a corny classic please don't. Remixes are allowed but not encouraged, just don't submit a dubstep remix of Nyan Cat or ANYTHING in that trend.
And what about comedic tracks? That's allowed, as long as it's done in a quirky way and it HAS to be about board 8. If you write a serious song it can be about anything, but 'joke' tracks should be related to board 8. What's NOT okay is to completely bully/flame another user in those tracks. Even if I hate the user myself, I won't allow it on this record. Don't want any stupid board 8 drama seeping through on this. If it's one line about a user in your song that's not so kind it's okay, but don't make a track completely dissing someone.
Can I collaborate with another user on here? Yes. It's not only possible, but encouraged. I think it will spark some creativity here. I would be glad to collaborate with someone on here myself, too.
For example: One could make a beat, another user could rap over it. It could also just be a folky duo, a DJ duo, a rock duo, whatever.
It could even be a collaboration with multiple users. The POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS
Can it be any genre? Yes. Even things I hate. As long as other people like it (I will always ask around on board8chat and even this thread for opinions), it will be on there.
How many tracks can I submit? Let's say two is the limit. If you collaborate with another user, that limit will increase to a whopping four. So you can have two tracks of your own submitted and two tracks with other users.
How big will this thing be? It could be a single album of ten tracks if there's not much people. It could also be a double/triple/quadruple album. I don't care, as long as the tracks are good or quirky enough.
Will you be on this? Yes. I am not the one who has the say all on everything though. To be fair, I will only put one track of mine on there, and one or two collaborations if people are up to it.
So who's in? Everyone's allowed, even if I think you're a douche. As long as that douchiness doesn't find its way to your tracks you're okay!
Submissions in: ONE by Liquid Wind. GET TO IT GUYS!
ps covers are kind of allowed now but keep in mind that if there are like 20 cover submissions for example, I will only accept about 5 to 10 of them depending on how big this thing is etc. Just saying!
Huh... I'm going to give this some thought. I MIGHT attempt something. I don't have Frooty Loops, but I do have thousands of loops (samples...sound... thingies) and a few synthesizers at my disposal. I'd have to actually sit down and come up with something.
I dunno. I'll think about it.

From: RayDyn | #022 Hey Vincent, you do a BB King cover yet? Also, while I can play bass guitar, I am no good at writing music.
I wouldn't know what to cover! Do you have a decent mic for recording that bass? If so you could still be useful because I'm sure we don't have a lot of bassists here! (I play bass myself among other things but I think I'm the only one)
Hey, does anyone have any advice for creating a song? Like, a method or process or something?
there's a lot of different ways people go about making music, some people base most of it on theory, some people base it on improvisation(which is also to some extent based on theory but it's a little different than just sitting in front of some software and writing it), some people just hear music in their head. my biggest advice would be to just dive in, don't be afraid to make bad things at first and just refine your methods as you go along
that's also true, it's going to depend on what kind of music you're making too, for instance
this is pure sample manipulation, there is no music theory involved in making this. and then for more traditional music the way that theory is employed will be different, maybe in one case you'd start fleshing out a chord progression, or in another you'd write a melody and then base your chords on that, really just a lot of different ways to go about it
I don't know of any music software that doesn't have a fairly steep learning curve, but I use FL studio personally and also like Renoise. I'd actually consider trackers like Renoise simpler than most of the 'normal' MIDI editors but most people would call me insane for saying that
Reaper is great and a lot better for recording audio than either of my recommendations, but if you're sequencing samples/software synthesizers I still say give FL and Renoise a shot. Reaper does have the advantage of the free version being completely uncrippled though, so if you want something cheap/free that's hard to beat.
also I'm curious what you mean by samples, do you mean one shots of drums and other instruments and such or do you mean you're doing something like a mashup?
I use Magix Music Maker. It's mostly a sample/loop kind of program, but it also has a few synthesizers. It has a pretty fair learning curve, I'd say. It didn't take me long to get used to it. Not sure if that's the kind of program you're looking for, though. :P

3DSRage posted... if someone could make a nice piano thing, I would do vocals.
It would be glorious >_>
I could do that. It would be kind of jazzy mixed with melodic stuff. I'm kind of a novice piano player aside from being adequate in musical theory though. If you're really up to it I'll work on it!
edit: Seg could do this too though and probably a lot better than I could!

think... early Kanye by way of Ghostwriter but with about 1/100th of the talent
