Holy crap that is an emotional match. What led up to him becoming such a liked wrestler? Not that I disapprove.

Considering that he started in 85, couldn't you say it was almost 20 years?

Aggression+Match quality+Underdog+People saying he couldn't do it+Years of building him up as a threat that just fell short+Amazing rumble win+HHH is a helluva good heel=Profit.

Shame that he ended up with Dementia and the stuff that followed tho. He'll pretty much never be mentioned again on TV.

yeah, he pretty much became the go-to guy for 'we need a guy to put a great match and immensely talented in the ring' for over a decade. pretty easy to be a face when people like your work.

his win was honestly one of the best moments out of anyone's career and they gave him a lot for it - 2 guys winning from 1st in wwe's history right now at the rumble. his name is pretty solidly in the books.

unfortunately he's voldemort due to his brain literally turning to mush.

Yeah, not to forgive what he did or anything, but it's been pretty much proven at this point that he was completely insane from brain damage

Yeah, I can think of so many times where he challenged for the WWE title only to come up short and get a standing ovation after the match (vs Lesnar on Smackdown, vs Angle at the Royal Rumble).

Its impressive as a wrestler when he makes people BOO HBK.

I believe they said his brain was the equivalent of an 85 year old with Alzheimer's.

Like I said, doesn't forgive his actions, only explains them. And as much as I loved Benoit, people who are saying he should be in the WWE Hall of Fame are either extremely naive or extremely stupid. Benoit can be enjoyed for what he did, but I don't think he can ever be celebrated.

he ain't gonna join their hall of fame, but he was still a great wrestler. he overcame a lot to where he got and proved that talent matters, wrestling matters, even through their sports entertainment phase. nothing wrong with celebrating what the man did right while also acknowledging that the last thing he did, and what he'll be remembered for the most, was something very wrong. love the man, love his rise, hate his end and more importantly, understand it. ideally that'd be the message people (especially wrestlers) get.

Some of it was just that he'd been putting on good matches for ages, some of it was just the "ages" part - a lot of guys who are around for a long time eventually end up getting pretty popular if they were ever close to the main event just because fans start to realize "hey this guy has been working hard forever" and people tend to want to support that kind of guy. Which I think was the thing for Benoit - everyone realized he'd been a great performer for longer than most had even been watching pro wrestling, he'd never won "the big one" in the WWE, people wanted to see him finally succeed after putting in so much work.
