Lately my computer keeps shutting itself off on it's own. Never when I am using it but when it's just on it's own. I do not think it is the power supply because I already had to change the power supply about 8 months ago. Comp is only about a year and a half old. Just air blasted the dust out of so hopefully that will help. If it keeps doing it though what do I need check out? I had an old comp that had similiar issues when the CPU was messed up but you could notice that some of the pieces looked swollen and I didnt see anything like that this time.

Buncha reasons why a computer could be turning itself off. Temperature is one thing, if it overheats and reaches a certain temperature the motherboard tells it to shutdown.

Hmmm, could be a lotta things.

It usually happens after I have left it alone and it's like in standby mode. usually over night. It has happened for like the past week maybe.

This sounds dumb, but check that the power settings haven't changed. Is it screaming at you that it was shut down improperly when you turn it back on?

It says it recovered from an error and then when I click check for solution it says to wait a second and then finishes up and tells me nothing.

Hmmmm, that's odd. Has it happened at all when you've been using it? Just wondering if you've seen it happen at all - a bluescreen or the absence of one might help diagnose the problem. Honestly, laptops tend to be fickle beasts and it can be hard to pinpoint the problem, especially if it's not giving you error reports.

a random shutdown is a blue screen that has had windows settings to auto-restart when it hits.

i'd assume ram failure or temperature. but without knowing the details or error code, no way to tell.

It is a desktop and it never gives me an error code or any info when I start back up.

Bah, apparently I can't read then.

You can use this http://www.technibble.com/repair-tool-of-the-week-memtest86/ to test for bad ram, and this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 will walk you through how to use SFC to check for corrupted windows files.

Without error codes etc these are basically guesses, but they're easy to check and eliminate as problems. If it's not bad ram, chances are it's power supply or temperature related. Odd that temp would be a problem when it's in standby mod, but ram probably shouldn't be an issue in that case either (if it's going into standby happily anyway).

Just for the sake of completion, scan for viruses/spyware too. It's unlikely they're the culprit, but sometimes they cause more complication than you would think.
