I know Sojuro was clearly Shishios underling, but sometimes and underling gets stronger than you without knowing it.

Sojiro would probably be able to take him in a straight-up fight, but Shishio's a pretty manipulative and clever guy so I'd imagine he'd set things up in his favor in case his underling betrayed him.

Having no emotions was particularly hard for Kenshin who relies on reading his opponent (more than the average superpowered swordsman), not sure it would have been as difficult for Shishio.
