Seriously, look at the top comment here and tell me these awkward pseudo-intellectuals aren't complete scumbags. I know reddit's big, but does anyone take these kids seriously?

There is a time and a place for rational discussion of religion. When someone posts on their Facebook "Had a great time with the family today! God blessed us with wonderful weather!" It not necessary to respond with something like "God didn't create the weather man. God doesn't exist." Or even a comment explaining why the weather acts the way it does backed up with science. This is going to be read as an attack and will not illicit a rational discussion in any way. Send them a private message requesting a discussion of their beliefs if they bother you that much.
wow, what a dick.

Were the status update about shoes, alpacas, or economic theories, we could chime in with our two cents all we wanted. But the second religion is brought up we are supposed to shut our damn dirty atheist mouths?
You've bought into the lie that's allowed religion to flourish for years, that it's somehow impolite to rationally discuss religion. If my friend put on facebook that the CIA is run by space lizard men, I'd say, "That's ****ing stupid Bob, and here's why." I don't see a difference here with gods, spirits, goblins, or any other such nonsense.
I see this same post here ever day. And every day it manages to piss me off."
The top comment. And the one you posted was a refreshing but unusual exception from the norm.

Most people are stupid about beliefs (or the lack of them), unfortunately. Still pretty mild intolerance/ignorance compared to a lot of the places on the internet (again unfortunately).
This. It especially bugs me when atheists attack another persons faith while that person is going through a particulary tough time. Leave them the f*** alone. There is a time and place for everything and chances are, if the situation they're going through is bad enough then the seeds of skepticism will probably fertilize themselves. You could argue that this reasoning is why religion has been allowed to endure through the centuries but so be it. I'd rather be a good friend or family member and comfort them rather then remind the person of their religion's fallacies.
and
This^ this right here was the whole point of the post, not when they attack us I just feel we treat them unfairly when they do as little as say god bless or write a simple bible quote
and
There are stupid atheists too, remember. They fall in with this crowd the same way most christians do with theirs. Its just a place to belong. Maybe if people had a little self confidence they'd come up with their own ideas.
and
Even as an anti-theist, I agree. Facebook is not the place to argue. You would only make yourself look bad anyways, furthering the thought that we're all devil worshipping, baby snackers...
in fact, looking through the thread, it's not that bad at all.

This would shock me.
And I don't know why icon's cherry-picking through the thread to find the handful of nice posts (because if it wasn't already obvious, I specifically picked a thread about treating religion nicely, and the top comment was douche-central), because even a quick glance through other posts on that forum should make my point pretty clear.

Cherry-picking? I picked the first response to the message which provoked this topic. I put as much effort in my post as you did your topic.
Do you want me to highlight every tolerant message in that thread? Will that satisfy you? It's a thread that only has 40 responses; a fair percentage of those responses are level-headed, an equal amount of responses are obnoxious, and the rest are pointless. I'm sure there's worse topics on that board - this isn't one of them.

My point, to be clear, is that, in a topic specifically dedicated to trying and treat religious folk with respect, the top comment is about as dickish a response as one can think of. Certainly, one would expect some sanity there, but the majority opinion speaks volumes about the place.
But if I picked a bad topic to prove my point, apologies. I firmly believe that the rest of the site speaks for itself <_<

I actually had a topic asking the exact same thing a few weeks ago. While it may not be the WORST place on the internet...it's definitely one of the better collections of angry autists and bitter virgins that you could possibly find. I would definitely recommend it to anyone doing a dissertation or independent study on asperger's sufferers and their behavior online.

icon did a good job of pointing out some sane and respectful people on there, but yeah, sess's topic awhile ago really highlighted how pathetic a lot of people are there.

r/atheism gives r/circlejerk a run for its money for circlejerking.
And circlejerking is actually the whole point of r/circlejerk.
Difference is r/circlejerk is generally just making fun of the top page whereas r/atheism would probably actually circlejerk each other if they got the chance.
What's up fellow atheists. I just wanted to say that I have read the bible...which is more than most christians could say. Heh. reading it is actually the quickest way to atheism in my opinion. Epic.
