My laptop was working fine when I left for work this morning, and when I got home it was sitting in the exact same spot that I left it, but now when I boot it it says "disc read error, press control-alt-delete to restart right after the flash screen.

Long story short, my laptop decided to off itself. I say again...

Something similar happened to me when I was in school.
Was using my laptop, went to sleep, and the next morning windows wouldn't even boot up. I took it to the computer help center and they said it had to do with some windows update. Screwed with one of my drivers or something. I dunno. Luckily they fixed it, but barely.

I want to f***ing murder something right now, it was just f***ing sitting there, nothing touched it, nothing messed with it, and now it acts like there isn't even a hard drive there, at least the last time this happened it was from the laptop being dropped onto a concrete floor.

Open your hard drive bay and make sure it's all connected properly / try unplugging and replugging in the drive

It's a laptop, if it was a desktop I'd know how how to do that, but I'm pretty dumb when it comes to laptop hardware.

God dammit! I only have a Vista recovery disc and this laptop had Windows 7.

Turn over the laptop.
You will see 2 unscrewable panels, one of them is hard drive, one is memory. Unscrew and open the hard drive panel. It's not hard.

Far as I can tell, it's all seated and connected.

You could just try taking it out and reconnecting it.

That might take care of the issue.

No, BIOS reads that it's there, well, alternates between reading it's there and not there, it just shows that it has no memory at all, 0 mb actually.
