5. Legion (Mass Effect 2)

After having replayed Mass Effect 2, Legion probably wouldn't have made it into my top five. Don't get me wrong, I find him interesting, and the very concept of having a Geth crew member is pretty awesome in and of itself, but the problem I personally have is that by the time you unlock Legion in Mass Effect 2, the game is nearly over. If I understand correctly, in fact, by the time you unlock Legion, you really only have enough time to complete one mission (Legion's loyalty mission), before things start going to s*** on the Normandy and you have to rescue your crew, otherwise they all get abducted by the Collectors and turned into goo of some kind. Now, Legion's introduction as a Geth crew member and then having a loyalty mission in which he then destroys an entire sect of fellow Geth is pretty cool, but in that one game, he wouldn't rank that highly.

But then when you add in his appearance in Mass Effect 3, and you have a much more well-developed character. He shows up having accepted the Reapers, but even in doing this, the Geth aren't portrayed negatively, given that it's made very clear that the Quarians started that s***. And then he teaches you about Geth history, when again the Quarians started that s***, and I believe it's implied that Legion (the actual physical Geth body) is the Geth that started the entire uprising in the first place? And then he once again serves as a cold, calculating Geth voice in terms of winning the war against the Quarians when he plans on uploading Reaper programming to the entire Geth force, despite the genocide of the entire Quarian race. And again, even in this, he doesn't completely come across as evil. Especially since he sacrifices himself to give strength to his people. I admit, I cried when he referred to himself as "I" and then shut down. It was a touching ending, and enough for a top five placement.

4. EDI (Mass Effect 3)

The thing that all four of my top four have in common is that they're all great for some fun comic relief when the situation calls for it. And of the four, while amazing, EDI is still the weakest personality. First off, EDI in Mass Effect 2 was okay, but not great. Don't get me wrong. Okay still puts her in the top ten, since there's a pretty clear gap between Jack and Zaeed (plus Liara only made the top ten because of Mass Effect 3 herself). But yeah, EDI was interesting in Mass Effect 2 solely because of her interactions with Joker, which allowed for her become the Fran to his Balthier, thus making her the somewhat witty straight man to his more-delightful personality. It was actually a nice dynamic to have a character like Joker growing to evolve and actually befriend another character. Most of the others just seemed to change their opinions with one snap of the fingers, if they changed them at all.

But Mass Effect 3, EDI gets a body and becomes her own character, and it's pretty awesome. She's still got some of those good droid jokes (always talking about killing all humans and whatnot), but now she's also able to go with you on missions and the crew is more capable of treating her like an individual being, rather than a ship or something else. The new body also makes her relationship with Joker more fun, because it allows them to become more than just friends that have awkward sexual tension to actively pursuing a relationship. Honestly, I feel like EDI, over the course of two games, has done more for Joker's character than anything he himself has done. It's because of her that he's EVER left the ship and gone out on his brittle bones, and honestly, I appreciate her for that as well.

Honestly, if it weren't for Legion dying to protect the entire Geth race, I think the loss of EDI would be the WORST thing about the destroy ending, because seriously, how are you gonna kill Joker's girlfriend? I ask you, how?

3. Mordin Solus (Mass Effect 2)

C'mon, was there any way I could possibly put anyone else in the top two? Let's be real here...it just wasn't gonna happen. But still, Mordin is a strong and solid third place. Like with EDI, he provided comic relief by sheer virtue of being hyper and spastic and yet still having all that knowledge within a scientific shell, thus making him a hilarious scientist. Honestly, I've just started in on my second ME2 play-through (as a renegade), and I'm keeping Mordin in my party non-stop just to see what sort of wacky things he says during missions and such. But yeah, Mordin's hyper-active scientific explanations of things make him a really fun party member in Mass Effect 2, and yet at the same time, behind his wacky antics, he's a very serious person. Like, when he's not going completely over-the-top and singing showtunes, he's intelligent and frighteningly aware of himself, and I think that gives him a nice multi-dimensional portrayal.

He comes back in Mass Effect 3, and admittedly his role isn't as big as some other characters that return, so it doesn't really improve on him that much, but still, he has one of the most emotional scenes in the game (the only scene I cried at aside from Legion), when he's sacrificing himself to allow the Krogan to cure the genophage, and all the while singing his little song, right until the end. I hate that we lose him, because even though he was older, he was the good kind of old. ;_;

the problem I personally have is that by the time you unlock Legion in Mass Effect 2, the game is nearly over.

You need to do a playthrough where you get Legion as soon as possible, doing none of the optional missions until you get him. And then take him on everything. He makes every single mission or planet visit better.

Sure your crew turns to goo, but it's worth it I'd say.

2. Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect 1/2/3)

Yeah, in a series in which only two characters have been with me in my team for every game, it's only natural that those two receive the most development and thus are the two most awesome characters overall. And when choosing between Garrus and Tali for these top two spots, it's almost impossible to pick one as better than the other, because they both bring something unique and different to the table. In the end, I went with the one that I didn't specifically create a new character just to romance in the number two spot.

Mass Effect 1, Garrus was probably the one or two spot alongside Wrex. You meet him first as the ONE Turian who seems to give a damn about the s*** Saren is trying to pull, which honestly puts him on a good footing to start because aside from Anderson, the humans you meet all kinda suck, yet none of the aliens are awesome or helpful in any way. So meeting Garrus, who's pissed about Saren, and then headshots some guys in a doctor's office, is pretty badass. Now, the thing I like most about Garrus is how his personality is dirrectly influenced by Shepard. Everyone else has their own things going on, and they're essentially their own character, but with Garrus, depending on whether you're a paragon or a renegade, his responses to things change. He can either become more gung-ho about the power of the spectres, or more appreciative of the rule of law. Either way, he's the most morally gray character in the game, and reminds me a lot of Juhani from KotOR in that regard, and I liked that about him.

Mass Effect 2, Garrus comes back again as one of the earliest squad members you can recruit, and even during his recruitment mission, the game almost kills him, which immediately puts you into "Garrus no!" mode. Thankfully, he survives with some facial scars, and no Garrus, Krogan women aren't the only ones who find those sexy, are they FemShep? But Mass Effect 2 is basically where Garrus starts to come into his own as a unique character among your squad members, and it's really a role only he or Tali could pull off, as someone who went through hell with Shepard in the first game. Garrus becomes Shepard's best friend, essentially. Like, they're chummy and friendly and even joke around with one another, and it's fun because ManShep has Garrus joking around about how ugly he is, while FemShep has the secret sexual tension going on (and in fact I'm working on romancing Garrus right now in my FemShep play-through). But the point is that Garrus is probably the best friend Shepard has had throughout the series. And it works because he's a soldier (somewhat), so he knows what Shepard is going through. Tali, unfortunately, could never fill that role.

Mass Effect 3, Garrus is basically more of the same from Mass Effect 2, but there's nothing really wrong with that. I mean, they're already good friends, so there's not a lot of development you can add to that. But still, he and Shepard still have their little bro-date together, and it's a fun time. And it's just nice to have Garrus around for his interactions with people, because I feel like he's grown as a character over the course of the series, so his relationships with the other squad members changes as well, which is a nice touch to the game.

1. Tali'Zorah vas Normandy (Mass Effect 1/2/3)

Really, how could I choose anyone else for the one spot besides the most adorable squad member in the series? Over the course of the series, Tali grows from a naive young girl experiencing the galaxy for the first time (and let's be honest here...she's probably the least-qualified person in the original game to go on a mission to save the galaxy from the Reapers) to a bad-hardened war veteran that's capable of commanding the respect of her entire race. Really, the girl is the biggest case of "right place, right time" in BioWare history. Now, Mass Effect 1 Tali was definitely third-best in the game, because Garrus and Wrex were just naturally superior, but she was still so naive and sweet and cute that she developed a fanbase.

Mass Effect 2 Tali is where she really starts to evolve and become a stronger character in her own right, rather than just following the Final Fantasy example and being the young, naive girl in the group (to compare to FF7, Ashley is Tifa, Liara is Aeris, Tali is Yuffie). In fact, she's the FIRST original squad member you meet in the game, although it takes considerably longer to unlock her as a playable character, and right off the bat, she's kind of a badass HBIC compared to what she was in Mass Effect 1. She's in charge of a squad of Quarians AND she's trying her best to lead them, even though most of them seem to be complete idiots that get blown away the second they stop trusting her.

You pick her up from her recruiting mission which is admittedly kinda lame, especially compared to say, Thane's or Garrus', but still, it's always good to have her back, and here's where Tali starts to skyrocket up the list overall. I think Garrus would've had a legit claim on the one spot after Mass Effect 2, but Tali was definitely in the top tier even in that game. Tali has to go back to the Flotilla, and we get to see the first instance of Quarian life as she has to defend herself from treason due to her father f***ing things up royally in an effort to try and speed up the process of retaking the Quarian homeworld. So Tali now has to deal with the fact that her father is both an idiot and a traitor, depending on how you look at things, and even though she's grown in the two years between the first two games, she's still innocent enough where this revelation truly hurts her. Still, Shepard saves the day and then goes on to have, in my opinion, the most adorable relationship in the series with her (ManShep only, sadly). It's just cute having Tali deal with a relationship, because she's nervous about it for reasons beyond just love jitters. She has a legitimate reason to be scared, and it just makes her that much more desirable.

Mass Effect 3 though really solidified Tali as the best character in the series. You don't bring her onboard for a large portion of the game (too long...just like in Mass Effect 2 ;_:), but when she pops up, it's the best part of the game, in my opinion. You have Tali representing the Quarians in their war against the Geth (and honestly, why the hell are the Quarians choosing NOW to start s*** with the Geth?) She's the one who has the most experience dealing with the Geth, and by the end of the game, she's even a little bit friendlier with Legion, showing character development. She fights alongside Shepard and even though she sees that it's wrong to attack the Geth, she's still a bit morally gray, and she still cares more about the Quarians, which makes her death scene (thank God I didn't see it for real) all the more emotional. Romancing her is cute once more, especially since you finally get to see her face (even if it was a bit of a cop-out). And drunk Tali is the greatest moment in the series, bar none.

She's just a really great character, and I love her so so much.

Best list.

Not a lot I would change here. Before ME3 I'd say Legion was too high, but I agree he definitely was improved by the game. Very endearing. Same with Mordin. Humans all in the right order basically, might would put Ashley down a notch but having not seen her in 2 or 3 yet may bias me.

Garrus and Tali are easy 1 and 2. No doubt about it at all, it's why they're in all 3 games!

Tali's great, but she's not my personal favorite for a few reasons.

1) Racism in me1 and 2. (that thing we all hate ashley for, right?)
2) Inconsistent characterization in each game, as well as forceful changes to her personality to allow for romance/ease of writing.
3) Artificially introduced into the party in every single game, which is weird. She's also artificially boosted in quarian rank each time.

She's great in me1, her romance in me2 is incredibly cute, and 'induction port' is the best thing ever. So it's not like I hate the character, so I'd probably put her somewhere in my top 5.

As far as the rest of the list goes, I agree with a lot...

1) I agree 100% on your assessment of wrex (well, i agree with a lot of your list, but that write-up was perfect)
2) miranda doesn't deserve to be so low. sure, she's a *****, but not every single character has to be your most amicable best bud. She's well-written and an interesting and believable character. She definitely deserves to be above a few of the lukewarm ones.
3) Jack improves by a factor of a thousand percent in 3. She was terrible in 2. (way worse than miranda)
4) Thane was boring in 2, but for some reason i was a huge fan of his appearance in 3.
