The first is for sure the best, and I think that the third one wasn't as bad as some people are making it out to be, though there are some "wtf seriously" moments. I've also started the Gone series, and I think it's excellent as well. I'm also looking into reading the Gone and Battle Royale books now, after seeing the praise they're getting. As mentioned it does an amazing job fleshing out the story of all of the kids involved.
