They miss so many amazing things by not looking around them, are they scared to make eye contact or what? It's not gonna kill them!
And then there are those people who walk and stare at the ground but as you get close they take out their cellphone and mp3, always changing songs or getting a text when passing someone, always!
It's like nobody has the courage to look at another human in the eyes nowadays, or something.

There's not much junk to trip on on the sidewalk or just a simple road, paved or not.
I have weird ankles. I tend to trip completely randomly. Heck, I trip less the rougher the terrain is. So I actually have to focus somewhat on walking, it's annoying.
I can see where you coming from, and a friend of mine actually had sort of a thing recently where he was talking about how complimenting random chicks isn't creepy, and I support that kind of idea, though it is a bit out there.
But yeah, as for making eye contact with random people when walking around, I mean I don't make the rules it is slightly weird isn't it? You look at them, they look away, vice versa, it is an interesting phenomenon. I have no idea.

For example when buying something at the cash register, there have been times where I never made eye contact with the person, and in hindsight that does seem weird. I guess I make eye contact once or twice with clerks usually. Ha, really, what's "normal" is something we worry to much about I guess. I'm gonna stare at everybody now.

Well staring is strange yeah, I usually just glance at someone as I pass him/her, rest of them time I still don't look at the ground, I just look around.
I live in a small town and work in the downtown area. When I'm walking around I usually don't mind giving a smile and at least a nod, if not a "good morning" or such. Aside from the more timid people, I usually get likewise responses.
I I'm not sure I really look at the ground while walking, but I avoid eye contact while doing so. I don't like the feeling of staring at people/people staring at me.
If you want to spread happiness, you should sing.

I look at the ground to see if there's money down there.
You wouldn't believe how many dollar bills (Not just ones either; I've found four twenties and a fifty in my time as well) people just stroll right past.

The reactions are pretty black and white, some people think it's awesome as hell, the others freak out.

I'm not saying they should be the same as me! Just wondering why the hell so many of them do it.
I bet it's a cultural thing, pretty sure more sociable cultures don't do that as much as us.
I always keep my head and chin up while walking around because it looks like some kind of Charlie Brown mope to be walking around looking at the ground directly in front of you.
Though I don't make eye contact with people I don't know just walking by me, that's kinda weird.

One of my favorite things to do when walking through crowds like on my campus is to just stare at people and see if they avert their eyes or actually make eye contact

I used to look at the ground while walking, but at some point I realized that looking up is better. Looks more confident.
I also love eyes. Like really. They're the only part of myself I'm proud of. And if I'm talking to someone I'm usually looking at their eyes, even if they aren't looking back... I don't know. Of course, if I'm walking on the street, I guess I might say hi but the eye contact would be fleeting and it wouldn't really matter.
