Hello friends.

As some of you already know I read fanfiction.

This topic is going to be about me discovering things that make me question that decision, not help me come to grips with it.

Good stories upon request.

Our first story was kind enough to let me know in the first sentence that I should not be reading this particular story. Actually the summary gave a pretty strong suggestion but I couldn't resist at least clicking on it. Turns out the joke is on me.

AN. Hey this is my first story, so when reviewing be easy, though I would like you to help me better my writing, so anything, you think might help me become a better writer, please tell me.

That's five commas.

Five ****ing commas.

More later.

So old but yes that is a classic.

This is more about the more mundane terribleness.

15. Clash of the Alphas » by Miz636 reviews
With just two more years at Hogwarts left, Harry must fight for his position as Alpha when another Alpha challenges him for it – twice. As the war comes to a high point, everyone must get along and fight for their lives or they stand to lose everything.

The title alone gets me every time I come across this. I don't care if this is the best thing ever written I can only imagine Realo calling this the best fanfic ever and I just can't stop laughing.

35. Thank God the New Girl Came » by AbsoluteMadness29 reviews
The mysterious Nicci Lonsen joins Hogwarts in Harry's third year, and she quickly becomes one of the group and close friends with him, Ron, and Hermione. The group through the years, 1st person. Harry/Ginny Ron/Hermione Nicci/George? Watch out, Hogwarts!

36. The Golden Quartet » by Cadence Callula Laramae reviews
The Golden Trio has a fourth member and has since the begining of first year and she certainly makes life more interesting. Follow the gang through the years with humor, adventure and you never know, there might be a little bit of romance!

People who feel the need to insert OCs into an amazing universe make me die inside.

People who so obviously insert themselves make me wish they had died inside before submitting their stories.

Well, you know, better than forcing a character into a role they clearly aren't fit for.

Not by much though.

A former friend of mine did that with an X-Men fanfic she wrote. Not only was it terrible and poorly written, but she also put herself in the story to get with Pyro. I felt like less of a person for reading it.

Also to clarify: There is nothing wrong with adding an OC to make the story better by fulfilling a new role and stuff. It is needed sometimes.

But there are bad OCs a lot.

Then there are self-inserts.

Now this next fanfiction isn't bad, just written by someone who isn't native speaking English and thus he can be hilarious:

"It's all my fault, Minerva. My political opposition is right - I am the old fool who is starting to loose his grasp. I failed again, naively thinking that a simple Fidelius Charm would save Potters from Voldemort..." he said, his usual eye twinkle having a nice vacation somewhere far far away from the British Islands

...

The pair entered without an invitation, audible or silent, taking in their surroundings for a few moments. They took blank-faced fat man by hands and slowly, but surely proceeded to the living room, dragging the resisting fat man with them..

I have thought on occasion of writing a Harry Potter fanfic and creating an OC because I find Rowling's series is sorely lacking in something crucial: a Slytherin student who exemplifies the positive attributes of the House- pride and ambition sans the hellbent on blood purity and cut-throat attitudes.

Every other House has at least one person that upholds the negative attributes of their House and several more people that demonstrate the more positive traits. Example: Gryffindor has Romilda Vane (or hell you can even say James and Sirius were negative in their year if Snape's flashback is any indication), Ravenclaw has Michael Corner, and Hufflepuff has Zacharius Smith...

But Slytherin... Slytherin has all negative and, at most benevolent, chaotic neutrals running amok with absolutely zero positive-natured students. The only "good" Slytherins are the two professors, and Snape and Slughorn come across as pretty neutral as well despite obviously being alligned with "the good guys". It just makes the House seem so one-note and shallow. Were I ever to follow through on the whole fanfic craze, my first step would be to create an OC Slytherin who is worthy of the House placement without being a total douche. And no, as she'd be personifying pride and ambition, she'd be the opposite of me in everything but gender. She definitely wouldn't be a self-insert character as I'm lazy and unmotivated.

If I could, I would just force Percy Weasley into that role. He'd make the perfect Slytherin if he wasn't too old! Think about it: he's proud of himself and his intelligence and his ability, and also ambitous enough to chase his dream job at the Ministry even if it means forsaking his family to do so, yet he's not so blinded by his own ambition that he completely loses sight of himself and eventually he realizes where his true loyalties lie. A perfect "neutral-good Slytherin". Only because of his age, he would only be around for one or two years which is not ideal for the series as it needs a more present "good" Slytherin.

Are inserts, particularly self-inserts, really so bad? When I read the original work, my thoughts always stray about twice per chapter to "now what would I do if I were there?"

I've never touched the world of fanfic, but after writing a November novel, I've turned to a project of my own to practice my writing skills. I don't doubt it's bad right now, but I'm hoping it gets better over time. But if self-insert fanfics are such a horrible thing, then I guess I'll just keep it to myself forever until the end of days.

That said, any suggestions for fanfics that are actually decent? My primary reading series is The Wheel of Time. I've also read The Sword of Truth (though the most recent book from Goodkind reads like fanfiction itself.) Ages ago I read LotR and Xanth.
