Well Atlanta should be included in Metro Atlanta, no? We're not talking about Atlanta's suburbs here, which definitely favor Republicans by a lot. Either way, McCain needed rural Georgia to give him the comfortable victory he got in 2008. It's true that 2008 was a bit exceptional in that it's the best a Democrat has ever done in Georgia since it turned Republican (not counting white Southern Democrats like Clinton and Carter). I think Bush won Metro Atlanta both times.

ah, i suppose we have different definitions of metro atl. I hear metro atlanta and i think everywhere around atlanta, not atlanta itself.
Atlanta is polar opposite of the suburbs. Ill admit that its a liberal hub no question. Its just the suburbs of atl dwarf the downtown's population.

RL5 posted... The difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is that Democrats think we shouldn't have any morals. They rebel against decades old social norms just for the sake of rebelling, like they never grew out of the rebellious phase. They're like hippies in suits. Their problem is since their entire platform is "morals are bad and we shouldn't have any," they don't have any beliefs of their own to stand on, and so they can never actually accomplish anything. All they can do is ruin what's already established.
You may not agree with the Republicans when it comes to economics, but you have to at least see that they're the only ones holding the moral fabric of America together. That alone is enough to get me to look past any questionable ideas they have on the financial system.

There's plenty of conservative majority areas outside the South. I'll try to list them:
Iowa
And of course, around every major city there tends to be a suburban/exurban area that leans Republican. For example, the northwest suburbs of Boston, the eastern suburbs of Seattle, etc.
Democrats get by in elections by dominating the 1/3 of the population that lives in the cities themselves to the tune of 80-90% of the votes.
We're so conservative we voted for the Democratic presidential candidate every time since 1988 (excepting 2004, which confuses me).
We voted for Michael Dukakis. Iowa's not a conservative majority.
