I'm about to buy a game with my gift card for GameMarket from the rivalry contest. These are the two highest rated games that I can afford with the gift card.
I've never played ME1, but I'm sure there's ways to catch up on the story through other means.
Which is a better investment?

The PS3 version includes this interactive comic thing that covers the ME1 story and lets you make some of the major plot choices that carry forward, since ME1 is owned by MS and they couldn't port over the game itself.

both games are pretty awesome. red dead has one of the best leads in recent memory, mass effect has a great supporting cast. both are meaty games that will take you a long time to complete. it depends on what you're into. if you're a big fan of rockstar games, get rdr. if not, get me2. i slightly prefer rdr but you can't go wrong.
Shepard is a very flat character - that's the trade-off you need to have in order to make a customizable avatar like Shepard. Shepard is well acted, especially by Jennifer Hale, but Shepard is not the dynamic person that John Marston is. I don't think they're even in the same league.

Characters don't have to be multidimensional to be good. Shepard has a (well, two, really, Paragon and Renegade) very defined personality that is played well.
