Well yeah, but a lot of the music sounds very similar to Nier's, just not as good. I think it's the mostly gibberish sounding lyrics in the back of most tracks.

also while i don't know the quality of the game, the soundtrack is actually pretty good too. which is rather surprising considering how lackluster the FF series tends to be on it. but this soundtrack has more in common with a typical shmup's soundtrack than nier (which still isn't very much as it's incredibly diverse). closest thing i can think of are the origa songs but that's less to do with nier and more to do with the kind of songs she usually does.

if it's the favorite ost on board 8 now that's more to do with its cult like status and it being relatively recent. it's a great soundtrack and one of this gen's best sure, but it wasn't the best in the year, let alone of this gen. a lot of the soundtrack was simply not that good, which weighs it down a ton. yes, it has a couple fantastic pieces that are among gaming's best, but it has a lot of mediocre stuff in the middle too and an occasional bad track. it's also not very diverse at all and is very "chrono cross" in that regards. if you like the style then you'll like a couple tracks on it. if you don't, you'll hate most of it. wouldn't say the soundtrack is 'vastly overrated' but it gets more praise than it deserves, definitely.

you can point to most FF soundtracks or Xenogears for the same deal. people like to drown out the stuff that isn't that good or just plain bad in exchange for the occasional great piece and then hail the entire soundtrack as amazing. not how it works!

I really can't think of anything I don't like on Nier's OST!

I'd say it's probably my (distant) second favorite soundtrack out there.

nier would probably be in a top 20 for me. can't promise top 15 and definitely not top 5. but somewhere between 6 and 15 is possible. but i like a lot of styles so it works out. hell, you'd probably find CC on it too because i also like that style.

I bought nier only for the music, and it's an amazing game even though the gameplay sucks, because the music is improved by context.
