It has me thinking about how something similar would be reacted to today though.
Like can you imagine if someone wrote a story like that claiming that certain political figures and what-not have a spot lined up in hell for them already? If it got noticed it would be for all the wrong reasons.
I feel like this is something that's arguably one of the best fictional stories ever. But I also feel like it could be a dangerous tool to generate fear if people took it to be the literal representation of Hell, because god damn are some of the images there frightening. Think about it, before you even GET to hell the people who DIDN'T DO ANYTHING, just didn't pick a side, are being chased forever by wasps and having their blood devoured by maggots. These are the souls of people who didn't even sin!!
That's to say nothing of the people spending eternity frozen in ice!
