That's weird. I've never really had to muck around with it at all to get it to work. It just works. In fact I think a recent update made it work even better. I'm quite happy with it.

In Adblock Plus, a new feature was recently added that includes some exceptions for ads that will be displayed. In your preferences, you can disable these exceptions by looking under the "Filter subscriptions" tab and unchecking the box that says "Allow some non-intrusive advertising". It might actually fix your problem.

That might be part of why adblock wasn't working then. I had that happen to me before, where I was using an old version of firefox, then updated adblock, and it broke. I think the newest version of adblock is just meant to be compatible with the newest of firefox, and not necessarily improve anything to the old version (because what could really change aside from the ad lists you subscribe to).
