City-boy-who-never-went-outdoor-camping-before alert. Need help getting past the latest roadblock in writing this thing for a book

Scene: Girl in a sleeping bag turns her head, the sound of her hair scraping the pillow fabric makes her extremely aware guardian look in her direction, showing her that he too is awake and leading into a conversation

Lack of knowledge due to being a loser: Do sleeping bags even have pillows, and if not, would it be weird if she either brought one separately or used her backpack or something for elevation. Also, would turning your head in the way I've described even make an audible noise (most sleeping bags I've seen seem really noisy, if that descriptor makes any sense at all so I'm sort of reaching here augh)

The price of mocking me for not knowing this is that you also help me in some way.

Sleeping bags don't come with pillows, most people bring one when they go camping. Whether the sleeping bag would make noise or not depends whether it's made of cotton (silent) or nylon (can be noisy). But if she's just turning her head, her head wouldn't really be rubbing against the sleeping bag, it'd be rubbing against the pillow. I dunno, I think you should find some other way for them to realize they are both awake.

Gah you're probably right but I just spent an hour doing one tiny paragraph about looking at stars and I really don't want to mess with it trying to make another lead-in. Thanks though, I'm just being dumb about this but augh

I ended up conjuring up some backstory that the guardian is really good at telling if someone is awake or asleep (as learned during a war where he specialized in taking out slacking sentries) so he just sort of asked why she was still awake without any real catalyst

This is what my lack of knowledge on sleeping bags reduced me to. And, woo, 1200 words in three hours, I'm trucking along now
