October - December 2011 (3 months only):
* $13.1 billion net profit, more than any other U.S, company
* 37 million iPhonys sold
* 15 million iFads sold
* About 1.2 billion people worldwide use at least one Apple product, making the Church of Apple the world's 3rd largest religion.

What the U.S. government needs to do, posthaste, is enact a 90% labor/manufacturing "outsourcing tax" on all profits derived from foreign labour.

Unless the broken 7 year old iPod a friend left at my house counts.

literally not going to happen

also a poor way to deal with this problem

getting Asia on the path of workers rights would be a better way to handle this. of course US corporate and political interests are destroying what's left of that movement here, so obviously we're not gonna be the people to do it.

no, then the companies would exploit africa next. or south america.

workers rights and cheap labour tend to be mutually exclusive. if foxconn workers weren't on the product lines 12 hours a day they wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand.

It's amazing how many working class people in the US take what rights they have for granted and are reacting with complete apathy as they are slowly being eroded away.

so then you get Africa to unionize as well. let there be no place in the world where companies can treat people as slave labor. I'm skeptical about South America, though. they are actually pretty democratic and human rights-centered, in situations where the US doesn't directly interfere.

yup, at any cost. it doesn't matter that overseas factory workers are committing suicide due to the stress, as long as Tim Cook and his cronies profit immensely, right?

So progress is to force labor and manufacturing out of America with overbearing laws

and then force companies out of business with even more overbearing laws trying to correct your previous overbearing laws?

The articles I've read on this subject generally conclude that the rate of suicide isn't particularly higher for those workers.

It's pretty much impossible these days to not have a device made by slave labor if you live in America.

So Americans can pay triple the price for the same goods and workers in Third World countries starve instead?

overbearing laws were not to blame, the Reagan administration basically gutted manufacturing and the middle class with free trade, and they did it on purpose. the "corporations here are too regulated and they have to outsource to china to stay profitable" is a lie made up by the American right.

like most bad things that have happened to American citizens over the last 50 years, it was done by our ruling political class and with full knowledge of the consequences it would have for the average American
