Yes. When this happens you're supposed to make up your own money. The bank is supposed to have limitless funds. However, I had like 3 monopoly boards so i had 3x the cash for the bank, so it eventually happened a lot less.

Yeah you're probably playing incorrectly. I know everyone has sort of adopted their own set of rules. If you actually read what Free Parking is, you should never run out of money.

I don't mind other people playing by house rules.

What I do mind is when people play by house rules and then complain about a game of Monopoly taking forever.

Pretty much this.

I was amazed when I first played Monopoly without Free Parking-related shenanigans. The game's actually fast!

The official rules of Monopoly have Free Parking be a blank space. Nothing happens if you land on it. You're free from rent.

The most common house rule of Monopoly is that Free Parking collects "board money" -- debts paid from the income tax/luxury tax spaces, as well as Chance/Community Chest cards. Frequently they start Free Parking with a pot of $100-500. Land on it and you claim all the money.

This obviously drags the game out. When you remove money sinks from a game that relies on players running out of money for it to end (or you add money sources), the game is going to take longer. This is why people have games of Monopoly that last over 2 hours, when the game played by the official rules usually lasts about an hour (more if you have exceptionally talky traders).

Free as in you don't have to pay anything for landing there

Might as well cover the other two common house rules that tend to stretch things out, while we're here:

If someone lands on a property and decides they don't want it, you don't just say "oh well" and let it stay unowned until the next time someone lands on it. You have to hold an auction for that property among all the players, bidding starts at one dollar.

You don't have to go around the board once before purchasing property. You can purchase immediately.

Those are house rules.

I play the board money goes to free parking and no auctioning. Free parking way has a chance to shorten the game if the guy who's winning lands on it. I don't add money to it though, that makes the game last too long.

I've played this way too. Its a dumb rule and I don't understand its purpose, if you're trying to nullify the opening roll luck, you're probably just going to screw someone in my experience. Or someone hits the go to go/boardwalk chance card. Broken.

The thing I said you don't do in each of those statements was the house rule.

So "no auctions" is a house rule, "go around the board once" is a house rule

Somebody mentioned stopping at first bankrupt. I think that used to be one of the "Short Game" rules but I don't think that exists anymore. You play until only one player is remaining in the standard game. Auctions are in the standard game, you can purchase property immediately, and Free Parking does nothing.

Ok so it looks like the only house rule I used regularly is free parking pot. I can't imagine not auctioning properties though, that was the best.

When my family plays, we use the free parking jackpot, we don't have the auctioning rule, we don't have to go around the board once before buying, and we end the game when all properties are bought.

At the end, we take the combined value of all of our properties (forget how it works with houses and hotels) and add them up with our money to decide who won.

I learned all these official Monopoly rules a long time ago with a handheld device that used to play it. Even had it's own little characters programmed into it (Greedy Granny, Hotshot, etc.)

That said, I do play with the Free Parking house rule whenever I'm playing with other people, and that's simply because I LIKE my Monopoly games to last forever. Free Parking can change the whole tide of the game, and when that happens it makes for a more memorable game, IMO.

Circling the board once before purchasing just makes the game more luck-based. Getting crappy rolls early on can be really rough to recover from and isn't fun for anyone.

Free Parking with no jackpot isn't terrible, but I still like the tenseness without it. The less money that is in the game, the tighter everyone is which makes each roll a make-it-or-break-it situation. Much more fun than two players having $1000 and just waiting until the balance swings far enough in one direction for someone to have to start mortgaging.

From: Megaman703 | #018

Yeaaah, that'd result in everyone bailing out the one person in last so the game wouldn't end.

... actually that might result in the game ending faster. With three people, once last place is going to go bankrupt the player in second has to keep covering his expenses to prevent first place from winning. This effectively drains second place twice as fast. Though it results in awkward situations where last goes bankrupt on second place's property and second place doesn't want to bankrupt him.... eh, it's a lousy rule either way.

auction rule never comes up because who doesn't buy every single space they land on

-Players who are currently pouring all their money into housing development
-Players who land on a low-value property such as the third of a colour already owned by two other (different) players
-Players in dire straits financially unless the property in question is game-savingly valuable

There are probably other circumstances.

Also I've never heard of this "circle the board first" house rule. That sounds awful. There are much better ways to negate the luck of who goes first, if you even decide that's worth doing.
