The obvious thing to do is find twins, raise one of them with the mom, and raise the other one in a room with no people and just the food and shelter it needs and see if it dies anyway.

Reminds me of I forget the man's name and most of the details but in the 50's he did experiments with newborn monkeys. They were given everything necessary for good physiological health but there was no mother monkey to raise them and they died.

I was going off memory as I heard about it from my father a while back. Thanks to Google, found that the scientist was Henry Harlow. Turns out the monkeys raised in isolation had "permanent" "severe behavioral and psychological problems" which included when many of the isolated females grew older and had babies, some of the second generation monkeys died because of negligence or abuse.
