Board 8 > So which of the following Sonic games is considered the 'best'?

I've never played a Sonic game before and there's a steam sale going on. I only have enough in my Paypal account for one game, so it's either going to be:
- The original
- 2
- 3 and Knuckles
- Sonic Spinball
- Sonic Blast 3D

I'm assuming the latter 2 aren't among the contenders here but who knows.

Any recommendations?

3+K is considered the best with 2 close behind, I think.

Alright, will playing 3 and Knuckles make it hard to go back to the original and 2 if I play that one first or is it (just) an improved version of 1&2?

I always thought it'd be a good idea to start with 1 as someone's first one.

But 3+K does have save files, even though it's kinda moot since the Genesis collection always have save states in them.

Played the first stage to see if it works (it does) and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the different paths you can take (I assume there are going to be even more alternative routes in the next stages).
Game crashed upon exit though.
