If it depends on the game, I care mostly about Melee but feel free to talk about whatever.

I figure it's Battlefield or Final Destination. But which one? I assume different characters have advantages based on whether there's platforms or not.

So how do you determine which is the appropriate type of stage? Like... I assume FD gives advantages to projectile characters? And stages with platforms wouldn't. Has any argument been formed about this or is it just pretty much well understood?

Yoshi's Island
Smashville
are the only three that fit into a Group one starter meanign those are the most fair stages really.

Its not like you're dealing with the same people who deemed Pirate Ship and
Port Town Aero Dive Counter picks or anything though.

Brawl itself is boring, but that video shows why MK is stupid, not Smashville.

for melee, it really depends on the characters

Dreamland 64 causes the least amount of problems (only downside is that its gigantic, but if you aren't playing competitively that won't effect much)

starter stage =/= balanced, those stages are mostly chosen for their simplicity, unless anyone actually believes that FD is one of the most balanced stages in the game. even picking from just those three, BF and YI both skew games less than SV does.

edit: LOL I just found out that PS1 and castle siege are now starters. alphazealot and his conspirators are killing brawl and I love it.

well, what type of situation are you playing?
free for alls?
teams? (team attack on or off?)
items on very high?

I swore off brawl like 5 months ago but I still love this video so much, after 3 years it still hasn't gotten old

We're talking 1v1 items off. I don't think it even matters which stage is most fair in any other setting.

Melee? Battlefield probably.

Definitely NOT Final Destination.

Battlefield and Fountain of Dreams are probably the fairest. I think Battlefield has some interesting quirks with the shape of the bottom of the stage that might affect things. Yoshi's Island is too small and Dream Land 64 is too big.

No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.

There's a reason why there's 5 so-called "neutral" stages in Melee by tourney rules. There is no one clear-cut "fair" stage. Every stage has its pros and cons for different characters/matchups. The misconception that FD is the fairest stage because there's nothing there is common but that is THE chaingrab stage.

I dunno, that doesn't seem to cover the extent of how bad Brawl is. Look instead at this match



First round is pretty good for Brawl; whenever you're getting bored of it, skip to 6:20 for the second round.

The point being...ok so Brawl has some BS characters like Diddy and MK--we don't need to play with those characters--we can play with more enjoyable characters.

And...ok, Brawl is a game all about footsies. There's nothing inherently wrong with "footsies: the game"--it's just a different style. Not my style, but I'm completely sympathetic to people who find it fun to play.

But why on earth would you have an inescapable 0-100 chain grab in "Footsies: the game"? Just so that you can occasionally turn an interesting, close match into "welp, you're screwed?"
