Number 1 is Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Number 2 is Sonic and Knuckles
This is where it gets tricky.

Sonic Generations is definitely the best 3D Sonic, so it's ahead of Colors and the rest.

Sonic 3 is the hardest one to peg since I like to count S&K and Sonic 3 as separate games.

If I was to have a gun to my head, I'd almost have to say:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
2. Sonic and Knuckles
3. Sonic Generations
4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
5. Sonic Colors
6. Sonic the Hedgehog

Honestly, combining Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles really doesn't make it jump up. It'd stay right where S&K is right now on my list.

S&K above S3? Why do people keep having this opinion.

Sure, the levels are larger and more "epic" in S&K, but the level design suffers due to the grandiosity, while every S3 level is a classic.

Well, for me, nothing can top Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Everything about it, from the level design to the music, is some of the most fun I've ever had with a video game.

S&K and Sonic Generations come damn close, and adding Sonic 3 to S&K makes it better, but not better than Sonic 2.

Simple as that, really.

Marble Garden, Carnival Night, and Launch Base are not what I would call "classic."

Good boss fights in Marble Garden and Launch Base, but that's about it.

it's less about each individual games stages and more about how it connects into a much grander game and the inclusion of the Super Emeralds

I'm inclined to disagree. Levels like Lava Reef Zone, Flying Battery, Sky Sanctuary, and Death Egg Zone really stuck with me more than Sonic 3's levels.

also I simply refuse to separate Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

they were meant to be played as one game and counting them separately is just wrong in my opinion

as for zones. Sonic 3's only unremarkable zone is Launch Base Zone, but it's made for with the final boss and the accompanying music

In other words, I don't feel like letting Sonic 3 get a boost thanks to S&K greatness. Sonic 3 should be able to stand on it's own two feet with the big boys.

Then you might as well rank all three if you're going to do it that way because S3&K provides a new experience that the two games separately don't provide.
