Both Republicans and Democrats are supporting (and opposing) these bills. Do your research, and if they are for or undecided on SOPA/PIPA send them an email expressing your displeasure with the legislation. If they are against it, thank them for standing with the internet.

There are form letters out there but it usually helps if it isn't the same as everyone elses. You know why SOPA and PIPA are bad. Tell them.

So if SOPA passes company A can say website B has the potential to have copyrighted material on it so I want them shut down and the DoJ will do it.

yeah, people are pretty naive if they think this is going away that easily. the MPAA threw 94 mil at them to try and destroy the internet and that's just one of the interests behind it, when they say "shelved" they mean "dammit, we'll be back!"

One of my congressmen is Michele Bachmann. I have no hope of getting anything through that woman's head ever.

This is precisely why SOPA/PIPA is brain-dead levels of stupid. Like, anyone with even a minimal level of expertise on how the internet works will tell you this won't stop piracy because almost all pirates are tech saavy enough to go with any of half a dozen workarounds (ranging from as simple as "just type in the IP address" and "just use a foreign DNS"). All this stops is casual users and forcing every site with users to heavily censor them.

Oh, and this is ignoring things like being able to run false flag operations to shut down any site you don't like.
