Hey all this is Bartz btw.

In my philosophy class today the teacher posed a hypothetical situation in which a website was set up with two buttons. The first would kill the youngest person in the world, but would unlock the second which would end all global suffering. We were told to ignore the effects this would have on overpopulation, etc.

Within two minutes, I managed to have the entire class against him as he argued to push the buttons. We told him things like: "it's okay, you just have a less developed frontal lobe" and "you're a monster" and "I guess I'm just too good of a person to kill a child."

He hasn't given many convincing arguments, because babies are CUTE, so I was wondering if the larger community agrees that he's a monster / that he should kill himself.

This kind of sci-fi moral question is just never that interesting to me. I wouldn't kill a baby, but if somebody's like hey would you kill a baby if aliens held your entire family and friends hostage? ... yeah

I would've said to her something like "well you're talking all kinds of s*** to me but think about it this way... I'd kill the baby to save the world, and I would not kill a baby for anything less than the world being saved. On the other hand, if the first button was to kill you and not the baby and the 2nd button would, instead of saving the world, merely grant me immunity to any and all potential consequences of killing you, I would press the buttons with slightly less hesitation..."
