now FFIX was a nightmare to me. I enjoyed the cooky characters and their backgrounds, but I HATED playing through this game

well, I didn't enjoy FFIX as much as I should've because I always had to worry about where I am, whats available and when I can get the next item and if I'm nearing a point where I can lose an item
on top of the grinding and long battles

Hippaul is the son of the Hippo lady that asks you to race with him to help him lose weight. He's only available when Vivi is your map character in Alexander in at the start of disc 3 I think? Before Kuja attacks Garnet's castle.

Yes it is, as supposed by Terence and proven by SoftReset. The timer will change in color every 100 hours, but eventually it will "overflow" and the time will start from 00:00:00 once again, as if you just began a new game. Once this happends, go to the Excalibur II spot and pick it up before another 12 hours expire.
However, it apparently takes 2 years, 98 days, 12 hours, 6 minutes and 28.25 seconds of real time for the timer to restart. Good luck >_>
Regardless, the bottom line is that the Excalibur II is meant to be gotten in under 12 hours from the start of the game, so getting it any other way can be considered cheating.
Probably should skip Excalibur 2.

you're also gonna need a playstation with a disc tray you can abuse (ie open while the disc is spinning) so you can skip the FMVs to have enough time iirc

I can help some but the card game and some missable items I can't really help with since I have the "worst game guide in history" which I believe should be put into a hall of world records since it's so tough to decipher.

Don't forget to draw Siren from Elvoret, Carbuncle from Iguan, Pandemona from Fujin, Leviathan from NORG, Alexander from Edea, and Eden from Ultima Weapon! Though they can be found in various bosses in the final dungeon.

As a completion player myself, let me tell you that it's really not worth it for FFIX. It's much more enjoyable to do the Level-1 Ozma challenge. You still get bragging rights and the knowledge that you went above and beyond in completion of the game.
But if you are doing a completion run of the game, there is really no way around it other than to sit with a guide right by your hand and follow it. And that really just isn't too fun.
if I see a playthrough topic for a game I'm quite familiar with, I enjoy helping the person out by giving general tips and missable knowledge. even to go as far as following the topic and mentioning something right before it occurs to avoid possible spoilers
am I assuming too much out of people here or is FFIX REALLY that bat s*** ridiculous
I can state some of the most obvious missable items in every FF game but not all of them but I guess I'll still help you when you need it but not everything.

The biggest problem is the Gilgamesh quest the requires you to open nearly every chest in the game which is what makes 9 such a huge pain in the ass to complete.

I did everything in the game except for winning the Hippaul races 100 times and getting Excalibur 2 (which I saw as a completely different game I'd play if I went for).
I think the FF9 FAQ nails everything. I think it actually nails too many things. If you're like me, you don't care of you miss a chest with a potion you can buy or something. You just want every limited item in the game that actually matters for something. So yeah, check out that FF9 FAQ and I'd recommend just posting on that board. I just went there yesterday and some of the people that posted that are still there today (Soft Reset being one of those users).

One reason FFX is so awesome is there are no missables at all, except for the Al Bhed Primers which you can actually load into your game from other saves.
