I don't have a PC, only a PS3, so just curious if ME2 is a good starting place or if I will be missing out on a lot of important stuff. I know it has some comic or something beforehand, but is that really a decent substitute?

You'll be missing out on some things that can affect your game in some slight ways - the comic just covers the main choices. Other than that, I don't know much about the PS3 version.
Do not do that. Just my opinion but not playing ME1 you miss out on a lot. I'm not sure if the comic can properly prepare you for ME2 or not, and there are a good amount of decisions to make in ME1 which are critical to ME2 as well as ME3.
The problem with the comic is it doesn't let you build your Shepard. I think for ME, it's very important to start playing Shepard the way you want to from the get go rather than in the middle of the series.
But if you have no alternative, I dunno. I keep thinking eventually they'd work the issue out and get ME1 over to the PS3, but at this point it doesn't look likely.
I think you should play ME1 first. It has a much better story and are a great way to introduce you to the universe. The story in the second one is terrible and even though everything else is improved I like the first game better so I think you should give it a shot. If you play the second one first it will be hard to go back to the inferior gameplay of the first one.

Do you think cats are clever? They don't hold a candle to dogs and SuperNiceDog is the cream of the crop since he won the Guru contest without breaking a sweat.
ME1 has a better story, and does a better job of world building, so it's fairly important that you play it. You can get by with playing ME2, but it won't be the same without the first one.

well, this is disappointing. I had hoped it was not so important. I really hate skipping games in series, but I really have no way to play the original. anyway, thanks for the input, guys.

The whole PS3 comic thing is only good if you've already played ME1, don't like all your decisions you made for transferring to ME2, but don't want to play ME1 again.

I played the first on PC and then used the motion comic for my big decisions going into 2. Can't imagine just starting with 2 without having played the first game though, yeah.
I started with ME2 and had a lot of fun (Only got halfway through though), but then went back and played ME and now I wish I hadn't started with 2 because the first is a lot of fun as well, and cleared some stuff up for me and I'm thinking I'll enjoy the rest of ME2 even more now. Make of that what you will.

Will not remove this line of my signature until the Seahawks, Jazz or Rockies win a title (Started 5-16-09) SuperNiceDog: Guru winner
I ran into this same problem as well. I basically ended up watching a YouTube playthrough of ME1 to make sure I was up to speed on the story. The comic in ME2 is basically the Cliff Notes version. It leaves a lot of stuff out and only has six of the first game's major decisions.
If you don't want to watch a playthrough online, then there's not much else you can do besides just playing ME2.
