Not trying to rile anyone up here, but I am just trying to figure this out.
I get why RPGs or like the MGS series would be immensely popular here-- people come to GameFAQs looking for walkthroughs and strategies, and those are the types of games that are more likely to require outside help.
That being said, I also fully understand why Zelda is the most popular series here... but I don't get why the rest of the Nintendo series are so popular amongst this userbase. Do people really come here looking for walkthroughs for Mario games?

I think GameFAQs has a slightly older username on average than most other gaming sites, which gives us a dose of nostalgia for the nineties, back when Nintendo was unambiguously the biggest name in games.

Most people here up with the NES and have stayed fans of the franchises, while a lot of CoD and Madden fans were never all that into video games, they just play what's popular at the moment.
And with Mario in particular, I think he'd be mega-popular on practically ANY gaming site that isn't specifically catered to teenagers.
He has probably appeared in more universally acclaimed games than any other character, by far. His main series in particular continuously redefines its genre (with one glaring exception), and has been doing so for over 25 years.

Sure, people will come here to look up a walkthrough or get a cheat for a game like Dark Souls, but Dark Souls isn't the only game they've ever played. They've also, in all likelihood, played and thoroughly enjoyed a Nintendo game. Most of us grew up on Nintendo, be it the NES, SNES, or what have you, so it's only natural for us to all like the games.
