FF X was more then likely the last of the golden age of JRPGs, but there have been some good ones since then. My favorite of this gen would be FF IV The After Years.

jrpgs are still packin', just mostly on handhelds. DS and PSP are monsters in this field almost to the level of the PS2. those 3 are basically the holy grails of jrpgs.

This is definitely true. Probably because development costs have gotten so high on consoles that those are the only platforms where you can profitably make a JRPG that isn't Final Fantasy. I also think it's possible that the portable nature of these platforms helps rein in some of the worst excesses of console RPGs, mainly the ridiculous bloat. It's one thing to have an RPG you CAN play for hours upon hours, like Pokemon or DQIX, but to have the main quest be 80-100 hours is a bit much, and I think being on a platform where players have to worry about battery life or only being able to play for a 20-minute bus ride keeps that in check to some degree.
