So Monday I lifted weights (a decent amount, but didn't go too hard), but it was the first time I lifted in like 3 months.

So I expected after resting Tuesday, I'd be ready to get back at it today. However, my muscles are still sore today. Should I lift today, or should I let my muscles rest? Is it harmful to lift while sore?

you shouldn't work out areas that are sore. if you didn't work out an area last time or it isn't sore, go for it.

An expert's routine generally follows what the other posters are saying, focusing on different muscles on different days of the week so you're never working on muscles that are sore. But for the first time lifting in 3 months, you're going to be sore for a while. Sources might say the soreness goes away in a day or two, but in practice, it could be almost a full week if you're really out of practice. Lightly stretch the sore muscles. If they're VERY sore, leave it at that. If it's just a light tingling, you can probably afford to do shorter sets with lighter weights. Don't push it. Just keep them limber.

like everyone else has said. I doubt you did a full body workout your first time back in 3 months, so work out a different area. Most people work out 3-4 times a week and do something like this anyway:

day 1: back/biceps/shoulders
day 2: off
day 3: legs
day4: chest/triceps/neck
day 5: off
day 6: deadlifts/squats (other exercises that tend to be full body)
day 7: off

you should also do abs every workout day. And add at least 20 mins of cardio on non legs days.

and to add, when i broke my knees and ankle and was bedridden for a few months (rebroke knees in physical therapy), it was a solid week to maybe even 10 days before the soreness left me.

I did a back/biceps/shoulders day my first day back. I couldnt even fully extend my arms to give my debit card in a drive thru

rotate muscle groups throughout the week.

At most do a muscle group twice a week while lifting, assuming you're just starting out. Muscles need to be broken down and then regrow, that's how lifting works. If you're working out muscles that haven't repaired themselves, you're just risking injury without any real benefit.

Alright thanks guys. I'm just gonna take another day off, and let the first-time soreness wear off before getting back to it.

If you're finding excuses to skip working out already that's not a good sign!
